epanzella, for what it is, I love the H&R! For an 8# gun it is the cat's arse I would not hesitate to take a 200 yard shot on a standing broadside deer. I shoot an unmodified H&R 45-70 which may be illegal in some States WOW, 12 year sago for the H&R, hard to believe! dougva.proboards.com/thread/4648/new-project-iii

Not legal in Ct but still awesome! I have a stainless H & R 45-70 that I really like and was tempted to convert it to a 45 SML but I shot so many deer with my old NEF 12 ga that getting it back into service as a 45 was like hooking up again with an old friend. Gonna try to break the cherry tomorrow weather permitting. Bullet will be 200 gr XTP w/harv blu sabot. I'll preload 50, 55 and 60 gr loads of RL7 to start my load development.

I made a post earlier n have been pondering all of the in's n outs. I have a NEF 45-70 n shooting those Win. 300 gr rounds put the hurt on my old shoulder. Its a light weight rifle n it just kicks hard. I have another NEF 45-70 converted n my light bullet loads like 17.0 to 18.5 gr of Blue Dot that is the cats meow fer whacking tick toters out to 150 yds & the bullet does not grenade on you hitting in the rib cage. The next step up is the 195bx n 200sst's that reach 200 yds with 30 gr on up of VV110 n 4759. I am fixing to start working on higher gr loads using 225 n 250 gr bullets to use fer Elk out to 250 yds max. I just need to keep the recoil no more than my 45-70 Win. factory loads. Some day i will figure out what i want to be when i grow up

[\quote]I can can launch a 200 gr 40 cal pill with a flatter trajectory / less recoil than their guns and it will kill deer dead out to 200 yds plus. A deer can only get so dead before it can't get any deader! Why beat myself up?[/quote]
Me 2. Will just say that the 200 sst's ( per what has been said here in other threads) are really only rated for speeds up to 2400 With 56 of 4198 mine crono's at 2380. Good enough for me

I shoot 60 grains both in my cva hunter 45-70 converted to sml and in my knight 45 sml.One is I won't screw up anything when I go to the range, and they both shoot rather well with that load. Also use 200 grain sst bullet and a hlbs.So far they seem to be no problem,I turned 68 last Dec.Hoping to go to Utah this fall for an elk hunt with younger brother.
