I have had good luck with Barnes 250 0r 290 Tez in my CVA hunter. Might have to knurl them some to get a better fit, veggie wad over the powder.

Good to know snd thanks. I am partial to Barnes bullets. They have always worked for me. What powder and charge do you use?

Ok and thanks for your response. I have some 225 grain xpb bullets for 45 long colt pistol that I use in another muzzleloader I can try.

Also Barnes xpb bullets also knurled and veggie wad. I really like the Barnes XPB 460SW in 275 for my H&R 45cal with Douglas barrel. Annealed and no knurling or sizing required. shoots good out to 300yd

I use 56-60 grains of IMR-4198.You have to find what your gun likes.

Ok sounds like the powder of choice is IMR-4198 maybe start at 55 grains. I like the looks of the Barnes 275 for the 460 S&W. Gives me more to experiment with. Thanks guys.

I am shooting 40gr vv n110 with 275xpb and veggie wad. Direct ignition @ 2275fps. Killed 5 deer with that load this season with my Apex. I had tried the H4198 but didn't find the sweet spot, I will go at it again in the spring.

Start at 36gr and work up. I wouldn't exceed the 40gr. That load shoots 1 ragged hole @ 100yds.

All right will follow your advice. I appreciate getting the benefit of the experience of the shooters who have been there and done that.

Just as a point of reference. The Barnes load data for 45/70 Ruger #1 (over 50kpsi) lists 41-44gr of N110 for a 250gr Barnes. No N110 load is listed when you move upto a 300gr.
