I have read about knurling bullets in a sabot shooting muzzleloading.Have started to my self, but do not really know the purpose for this.A lot of guys said it is for accuracy and others said for pressure.Any help?

The reason I knurl even with sabots I "think" it might give more purchase or grip to the bullet against the sabot. Hopefully less or no slippage of the bullet inside the sabot. Also if the bullet/sabot combination is ever so loose the increased size of the bullet after knurling may make the combo just a bit bigger and fit tighter in the bore. Just my thoughts, take it for what you will.

When shooting near max pressure loads for the bullet/sabot combination, there was concern, as Jim mentioned, that the bullet would slip in the sabot, causing the sabot to fail. This was called “drilling the sabot”. The easier the bullet obturates, the less likely “drilling the sabot” is likely to occur. The original concern was with 195Barnes in a 45, to the best of my remeberance.

I knurl for the reasons given in the previous post, I also index my sabots. Can you explain indexing your sabots in further detail please? Is it making sure all pedals are touching the lands?

Make sure the sabot rides on 2 lands per sabot petal. This of course only applies to a 8 land barrel and 4 petal sabots. Brux 45cal barrels are 6 land so its not gunna make much difference how you load the sabot. MGMs are 5 land. Mcgowen offers both 8 and 6. Pacnors are 8.
Some people make a small mark at the muzzle and line up that mark with a groove between the sabot petals.

Just to add to the conversation. When doing a one to one direct comparison: I am using 40 cal sst bullets in my 45 cal break open rifle, 4198 base and 4759 booster and harvester sabots. When shooting a regular (un-knurled) bullet, my groups were 1.5" at 100 yds. When i started knurling the bullets up to ~.403" the groups shrunk to sub 1" every time at 100 yds. Usually around .8" center to center

I index my sabots with one petal straight up by lining it up with the scope mount. I get 2 inches @ 200 yds so I'm happy.
