Listed my CMC Rem Shilen to garner cash for a car repair.
Hoping to have enough left over to replace the bolt muzzleloader with a CVA.
If I go with a Scout 2 (like the stainless and break lever better), can sabots be shot through the brake or would the brake have to be opened up some? Would opening the brake negate its effectiveness?
Thanks for the incoming wisdom.

Most say don’t shoot sabots through the break. I did and never had a problem. Got rid of the break so I don’t worry about it anymore

My Encore is Magna-ported and it flame-cuts the sabot skirt, but shoots VERY accurately. I was just wondering if anyone had tried it on the Scout 2 with the brake still installed because it looked like the ports in the brake were pretty substantial. Worse case scenario was that I went ahead and did the conversion and then just replaced the brake with a thread protector if the accuracy suffered. Thanks again!!

I have always been told by my seniors to not shoot a sabot through a brake. There is a possibility of the sabot getting hung up and becoming a barrel obstruction Just my .02 Drop

Just be aware that the Scout V2 brake uses a metric size thread and pitch. M18x1 (18mm x 1mm) for the .45-70.

Just got a new scout yesterday and came with thread protector stuck in packing foam Yeah they didn't have them when I got my .450 BM over a year ago. I ended up ordering a Beretta/Sako M18x1 that fit, but was black phosphate. They have had them listed in the parts section on CVA's site for a few months now. They are only $5.40, but I was just waiting until I ordered some other items. My Stainless thread protector arrived Via FedEx yesterday. This one is for the .45-70, .450 Bushmaster, and the .444 Marlin. shop.cva.com/pc_product_detail.asp?key=1F9B3C73CAA44A9B9F8A42162A4518D3They also list one for the .35 Whelen, and one for the .300 Blackout. I'd say $5.40 is a fair price. Included would have been better, of course. Glad to hear they are including them now. They also changed some of the rifles back to the scope rail instead of the Dead-On mount this year. How is the .45-70 coming now?

My hunter45-70 came with the rail mount instead of the one piece mount and rings. That way I can determine which scope to put on it.

Mine came with the mount and I purchased the rail along with it so I could mount my Vortex Viper with the 30mm tube.

Pulling back up my old post for an update on my Scout V2 conversion with ASG 209 bushing plug.
Started out with the break left on it, 200 SST in HSB sabots, 60 grains h4198, and Fed 209 primers. Groups were not as good as I had expected...took the break off.
Shot same load with the thread protector on it and groups still were not that great.
Shot the same load and used the crush-rib sabots instead. Groups got worse till I dropped back to 58 grains h4198.
Groups improved again once I went back to the HSB sabots with the 58 grains h4198. Final load change was to go back to using Winchester primers...group shrank to 1/2" @ 100 yards.
Went back to the range yesterday with three loads of 200 SST in HSB, 58 grains h4198, and Winchester 209 primers. Installed the muzzlebreak to see what it would do to my groups. Shot a single ragged hole, bullets overlapping at 100 yards. Looked to be about 1/2 a bullet width between centers, so guessing a 1/4" group.
This load and rifle seems to really like the muzzlebreak installed. Need to shoot a couple Barnes 195 to verify hunting zero.
More than likely I will change next year to shoot Fury 275 grain Star Tip smooth-sized, since they will be slightly cheaper than the saboted Barnes 195.

In my Brux barreled 45s I have found that 58 grains of H4198 is about max with sabots and even then sabot failure looms PDQ. I usually shoot 56 grains of H4198 and drop down to 54 grains with VV N120 which seems to shoot a bit better and cleaner for me. reflects my experience and opinion, others will differ. 10

Thanks 10ga.
I was shooting 58 grains h4198 in my Encore conversion and was getting pretty decent groups and someone suggested I bump it to 60 grains and it tightened the groups up to almost a single bullet hole shooting the 195 Barnes and HSB. But that Encore is a definite two hand loader!
I should have known to start back at 58 or even 56 grains with the CVA. The CVA is not quite as tight and you can seat with one very firm hand, so I thought the 60 grain load might do better out of it than the lighter load. Plus it would have been nice that both rifles would have used the exact same load.
Guess I should live in the Show Me state instead of Indiana since I just have to see for myself.
