Over 15 years ago, I went overboard and got about 3,000 blemished 200 SSTs. I’ve been determined to use them for hunting and have shot them from 2,509-3,100’/sec. I DONT RECOMMEND SHOOTING DEER WITH THEM AT 3,O00’/SEC VELOCITIES! They explode! At 2,700 I’ve gotten varmint like performance on white tails. Still not good. So this year, I mounted a serious scope on Rick’s former rifle: a Zeiss Duralyt lighted 2-8 and used a load of 37g VV110, LBH, wool wad, knurled 200 SST, CCIm for 2515’/sec, sub MOA accuracy, low recoil, and an extreme spread (ES) of only 10’/sec. This might be an optimum load. Extremely accurate, adequately fast, virtually no temp sensitivity, very light recoil. But, it’s still a 200SST. Pittman 225-250 or equivalent Fury next year. I’ve been watching this deer for 3 years in the woods behind my house. Never had planned to shoot it until this past Sunday evening. However, this evening, it stared directly at me for a full 15 minutes. I had no idea how he knew I was there. However, a smaller buck started distracting him. He turned sideways, I aimed and shot. He took off, couldn’t tell I hit him but don’t know how I couldn’t have. Couldn’t find any blood. Looked an hour. Got UTV, resumed hunt for another hour in the dark. Found him. Blood only at fall site. Hit him mid-chest just in front of diaphragm. IOWs high and aft. Unfortunately, for me, normal. Bled inside. Still, after another hour, I found it. Largest bodied deer I’ve ever killed.

Congratulations, lots of meat there Any pictures of damage after skinning or inside? I'd like to see what that bullet did. How far was the shot? edge.

Good job and it must be very gratifying to shoot one with an RB rifle. You two have done so much to advance the sport for the rest of us. Thank you Steve.

Edge, 40 cal hole in, hit just in front of diaphragm. Pulverized lungs, heart intact, tiny exit hole (jacket or part of?). Inside of rib cage showed no damage. I’ll follow Jim’s suggestion on the FTX for hunting or go on to Fury or Pittman or?? Any more deer shot this year will be sabotless 40 cal, knurled, annealed 240CEB, 10/50 VV110/2015, wool wad, 2640’/sec.
My hit wasn’t ideal: too high, too aft. A 195B would have had much more impressive terminal performance as does the 240CEB. And hopefully, the FTX.

A large deer, glad to see RB's barrel still being put to good use. Good info on the powder load.

The .40 Cal Hammers are also a good choice. I have had great results with the 297 gr version Full Form sized on two animals this year both DRT. I prefer the All Coppers.

Thanks for the heads up on how the Hornady 200gr. SSts explode at higher velocities . Tried 58.0grs. of N120 and got almost 2700fps at the muzzle with accuracy under .750" at 100yds. Tried the Barnes 195gr. bullet with a light knurl and got the same accuracy and velocity . Hunted in North Carolina and killed deer " very dead , very quick " with the 195gr.Barnes .Thanks again . Chris

Chris, I’ll post some thoughts concerning this. They’ll be on the Smokeless board.
