The New Mexico draw results came out a couple days ago. Any other members draw anything? I applied for elk, mule deer, antelope, ibex, oryx, and Barbary sheep. I managed to get a rifle tag for deer and the good one, a off range oryx tag. This is the critter in my avatar. This allows me to hunt all of December for oryx using any weapon. So, I will take my SML for at least the first 2 weeks of the season. This hunt means covering lots of miles searching for the oryx. These are one of the toughest critters I have ever seen so I will be using heavy bullets (330 gr APB) and a stout charge of powder. Shots are 100-500+ yards. This should be a fun hunt. They are definitely one of the best eating critters on this continent.

Good deal...The Oryx hunt sounds like a good one...How many of them run wild? What does off range mean?

Good deal...The Oryx hunt sounds like a good one...How many of them run wild? What does off range mean? Means they don't glow in the dark. I put in for Elk, BHS, and Oryx, but I came up empty. Seeing about maybe getting a landowner cow elk tag. I hear oryx is the best eating ever.

LOL! Yes, the on-range means you get to hunt either Stallion Range or Rhodes Canyon, both of which are part of White Sands Missile Range (WSMR). The off range tag means you can hunt anywhere in the state as long as it is not part of WSMR. WSMR is 50 miles wide by 150 miles long. Oryx naturally move off range as they are very nomadic. They may stick to a certain area that covers 10 square miles though. On a off rage hunt, you just cover many miles looking and glassing for an oryx to be walking around. There are about 4000 or so of them free ranging here in the state. They thrive in the desert and have no natural predators here, other than humans.
The LO Cow tags have gone through the roof in the past few years. Bull tags are even worse.

Congrats on the goat tag. My buddy drew antelope in 29 with ML. He came to my desk when the results came out and asked what ML to buy. LOL! We are heading to the range tomorrow morning to show him what these things are like.

Oh yeah, I sold him an Omega. He was not ready to jump into the very high $ stuff yet. Once he shot my Omega at 300 yards, he said "SOLD!"

Congrats! You get bulls in 17? That was always one of my choices. Watch out for snakes in Unit 20. I will be in that area for my oryx hunt in December. Post some pics when you score.

Congratulations to those that pulled tags. Tried some Oryx for the first time about a month ago that a buddy shot. Good eating but I'd have to put it behind a cow elk for flavor.
