Have an Omega X7 50 cal that I'm tweaking for my grandson. The barrel has the standard QLA that all the TC ml come standard with.
Should I have the QLA cut off and re-crown? or just check if it has the accuracy I want and then address the muzzle issue if it is causing problems?
Thinking that Thor and "belted" bullets will be the projectile of choice as that is what his Dad uses. My son in law is the typical 3 shots to check POI and then hunt for the 2 week ML season then on to regular firearms season. I do go on the "sight in" sessions but he's not interested in SML or measuring powder, so it's 209 primers, pellets and belted bullets.
I'm hoping Cameron will show some interest in guns of higher performance than the typical off the shelf guns and ammo. Thanks, 10

The QLA might be fine with the "belted" bullets. Most problems arise with regular conicals. Normally i would say just cut it but thats a X7 and far more valuable.

The X7 has been my hunting rifle for years now. For hunting the way i do, it is near perfect. Here, sabot are legal, and sabot is what i hunt with. If full bore bullets were required, i would, of course, shoot them. One thing i have learned; full bore bullets are not accurate in any of my rifles with a QLA. Every rifle i own with a QLA, will not accurately shoot full bore bullets of any type. Once upon a time, quite a while ago, i tried shooting big lead from an X7. It was as if i was shooting a shotgun. The big boolits made a shotgun pattern. Out of curiosity, i cut the QLA off. Wow, what a difference that made. The X7 shot them big boolits wonderfully. Surprisingly, the X7 without the QLA, also shot sabot a tad more accurately than before the barrel was cut. Cutting the QLA off the X7, worked real good. The front sight won't fit on the cut barrel, without hangover. What my plan was, is to put the sight on backwards. Regulation, of a sudden, allowed non-magnified glass. For my old eyes, which cannot focus so very good on the front sight, non-magnified glass is perfect, the front sight was eliminated. Cutting the QLA off for grandson, amounts to more than 'tweaking'. With the QLA, the rifle is about 'worthless' for shooting full bore bullets. Cut the QLA off, and the boy will be able to enjoy the X7. Having the boy enjoy a fine hunting rifle is 'priceless'. For a young hunter, i would do what is necessary, to make her/his experience better. Cutting the QLA off, is trivially simple. Yes, my old X7 works real good without the QLA.

Shorter barrel with a more limited production run and laminate stock. Unique barrel contour and factory peep site.

trapshooterjoe7... Value of SS Omega 50 cal?? Depends on are you buying or selling? Condition of gun? What kind of stock, previous use history, storage and care regimen, any alterations or upgrades, and how bad does someone want to buy or sell?
I purchased the Omega subject of this thread for under $100. It had been poorly maintained and had some obvious poor maintenance. However it cleaned up real easily and good. Plus the bore was great after I got the grease, insect repellent and dust etc.. scrubbed out and off the gun. So it was great bore, nice lam stock and mechanically in very good shape after some TLC. It was a good buy. Had the QLA cut off and new crown cut. Now on to load development, I think I'm going to try Thor bullets. 10
Thanks to Bestill for the cut and crown job, really quick turnaround.

I guess I'm late to the party, but I was going to say circumcise every last one of those T/C's. They deserve it!

So would would you cut and re-crown if you using sabots or just when full bore?

So would would you cut and re-crown if you using sabots or just when full bore? For me, bullets with sabot shoot plenty accurate through the QLA in Omega rifles. None of my Omega would shoot full bore bullet accurately through the QLA. Removing the QLA from one Omega, made it into an excellent full bore bullet shooter, and it shot bullet with sabot accurately too. A couple of my Omega still have the QLA, and put deer in the freezer when shooting bullets with sabot.

If it ain't broke why fix it? Like Ron's my Omega shoots more than accurately enough across the limited range it has. I can easily get under 1.5 MOA at 300 yards with 120 gr by volume 85 gr by weight of BH209 and a 300 gr SST or 290 gr Barnes. Mine does not like full bore bullets and the FPB groups looked worse than my pistol targets. I do like the QLA for loading though.
