I'm wanting to build my first AR and have a budget of $600 to $800. I have been looking at a lot of the PSA stuff. Looking for thoughts. This is going to be a varmint build so I'm looking to go 20 inch stainless barrel, from there its pretty open. Optics budget is separate. Please advise.

Anderson makes pretty good upppers/lowers, I'm kind of fond of how slick they are. Stick your money in the trigger, barrel and high quality loads. I've seen impressive groups from stock Rock Rivers with quality reloads.

I've only used Rock River components for my builds. Excellent results from RR, sorry I can't comment on other companies.

I feel like $600 is a tough limit because you could hit that with a good barrel and trigger. Instead of a build I'd likely just buy a Rock River, Stag, or DPMS. I don't go to building unless I can't buy it. I don't think you can build a quality gun for less than you can buy a decent factory gun.

Any thoughts on the new offerings from Savage?

I'm sure they will be fine. Savage has come a long ways since Coburn took over. Making a decent AR-15 isn't a huge undertaking like making a good AR-10 is.

Twist rate 1:7 or 1:8 which is better for a multipurpose varmint gun? I'm thinking 1:8 will shoot almost everything except the heavy stuff.

1:8 will cover most anything you want to shoot. I shoot 75gn and 77gn in my 1:8 all the time and they shoot well out 700m.

Take a look at Aero Precision receivers and Ballistic Advantage barrels. These two companies are under the same corporate umbrella. I purchased an Aero Precision OEM from Brownells and I'm very pleased with it. The OEM is comprised of the upper, lower, internals and Ballistic Advantage 1:7 barrel. You will then need to dress it out with components of you choice. I like this route, as you build to suit yourself. I did install a different trigger (Ruger's AR Trigger). Mine shoots sub-moa.

+1 on the Aero Precision upper/ lowers. Especially the M4E1 uppers. I have no experience with BA barrels.
