My buddy Norm just won the Wimbledon Cup with one and set two other records this year. His first one that he got about 3 years ago had a POI sir problem and that sort of thing has given carbon barrels a bad rap. They have since switched to a lower resin construction and the problem is solved. I've watched him slay with the last 4 he's had. I have a stock due any day now with a Proof Research Sendero contour channel. As I kill my stainless barrels they will all be replaced with Proof, Benchmark, or Hardy carbon.

I'm wondering if these types of barrels would make for a good MZ smokeless barrel.

Good luck finding one in .45 because I am not aware of anyone making one. For a while Proof would turn your blank and wrap it but they no longer do that. Benchmark and Hardy don't make calibers that big either. I only know one guy who has a carbon wrapped barrel on an SML and he sourced it through a guy he know who does that sort of thing. Ultimate Firearms either offers, or did offer, rifles with carbon wrapped barrels but I don't know who he sourced them from. I know Christensen makes a .50 rifle but doesn't sell the barrels that I'm aware of; at least not to the masses. If you could get one though I'm sure it would work great for SML if you could handle the lighter weight and increased recoil. I see no downside as long as you get one of the good ones.

Yeah, it would kick pretty good. Got a .243 build working it's way around in my head. But I don't know if the expense of a carbon barrel over traditional would meet the diminishing returns factor.

Guy at our club had/has a Christensen Arms barrel on his elk gun, 300 RUM maybe? Groups I saw shot out of it were accurate and I am pretty sure he took at least one elk with it at 600+yds. I only saw it once, our range is only 200yds so he didn't shoot there with it very much apparently. He seemed pretty happy with it and he is a stickler for accurate guns.

I have some experience with Proof barrels and as of now, am very impressed with their quality.
Some of the earlier wrapped barrels from other companies just about nailed the coffin lid shut on wrapped barrels. Fortunately Proof started from scratch and engineered a material that works as well as the hype says it will.
As of now, Proof does not offer a larger caliber and don't know if they intend to in the future.
If weight and quality matter to you and you can afford them, Proof barrels are what you are wanting...Proof is the only company I would endorse in the "wrapped barrel" industry.

Just got my first proof research seems that shoots really well just start playing with it but it. Pierce engineering they put on quite a few guns the problem is the price Around $900.00 probably around 80% of their rifle building is doing a lightweight hunting rigs.

My buddy that builds rifle showed me his rifle he built for NM mule deer hunt he went on. The gun is a 6.5X284 with a 28" proof research barrel with a brake in a light McMillan stock and NF scope. The gun weights in at 10.5#, and shoot great. 140 gr Berger Hybrids at 3000+ ft/sec.

CarbonSix will do a custom barrel in just about any caliber. They use McGowen blanks, and will make what ever length you want. Wait is currently 14 weeks and cost is $795. I contacted Proof Research and they are planning to offer a .50 cal in 2018 but no .45 cal barrels.

They are after bigger fish than the SML market.
