Ok, it's been some thing like 10yrs, since I last looked into the smokeless muzzle loaders. Bought my Savage before that, then picked 2 more for my dad and cousin. Found a slick Re7 & 250gr XTP load and never changed. Just works. Did I mention that I despise cleaning BP weapons? Fast forward now I have 4 kids all fighting for the one and only Savage ML. Looked into picking up 4 for XMAS and needless to say I was shocked by the prices. So what would be the best way to go? Get a bunch of Remington MLS and convert? Convert over some Savage cfs? Keep in mind that I need 4. What is this going to cost me?

I've got 3 guns 2 Savage c.f. conversion and 1 Encore conversion. After doing the Encore for oldest niece I realized that I should have went on and done a c.f. conversion instead of the break action gun. The one for my younger niece is another Savage C.f. conversion. I look at it like this with a break action gun you are limited to how much powder you can shoot and the range of the bolt action guns is a lot more . So with the C.f. as they get older and want shoot father I wouldn't have to build them another gun just up the powder and bullet. One other option is the CVA Scout in a 45/70 the gun around $300 depending on where can find it. And Luke at Arrowhead sporting goods will install the breech plugs for $185 and do a Radial brake for another$150. I would recommend doing a brake on them to help with recoil. Mark

The CVA Scout will have a Brake on it when you get it, unless you want to change out to a different one.

Good to know about the break open actions. Also wondering about the Remington UMS and their conversions. Is there any way I can have a phone conversation with someone who has done them?

Cva is no longer offering the 45/70 with a brake. My buddy just got one from Cabelas and it didn't come with the brake. When they checked with CVA they said it was no longer offering it . My buddy also contacted CVA and they told him the same thing. There are some still around with brakes you just have too look for them. Mccookkbob give Luke a call he can answer any of the question you have on doing conversion on the Remington, Savage on any of the break guns out there. He's a Great guy to deal with and will be more then Happy to help you out. You can get his number off his website Arrowhead sporting goods. Mark

We've done 3 Brux barrel/savage action rifles so far. They are easily 500yd+ capable so it would be something that would last forever and grow with them. Maybe not the cheapest option but not the most expensive by far. Luke at Arrowhead will help you with everything. I recommend muzzlebrakes as well but FYI ... I have seen better performance from the muscle brakes than the radials I've tried. Muscle brakes are available from Ryan Pierce and he's a freind of Luke's.

I just got in 3 of them with the brake. All but one was sold. Yes they are still available as of lat week.

I'm just going off what my buddy told me but I couldn't understand why they would stop putting a brake on them . I was thinking Cabelas was just telling him that so they didn't have to get him another one. But he said he called CVA and they told him the same thing. So I have no doubt that they still are and he didn't talk the right person or knowing him didn't talk to anyone at all.

Sounds like Cabelas had some of the last year models which did not have the brake. They had the same part number though. Last years Scout 45/70 should have a actual 25" barrel though if the spec are correct. The new model with the brake is 22" plus the brake. Some people might prefer the previous year model.
