A few years back we converted my brother's 45/70 buffalo classic to sml for my nephew. He took his first deer with it at age 6, a big doe he center punched with a pass through at 30yds. Load is a 195gr powerbelt on top 22 gr of N110. MV about 1500 fps, very accurate due to the copper plated soft lead. I was always a bit worried what it would do on bone, and this past weekend we found out.
Same load, this time in a tree stand over looking a bean plot. Big doe came in quartering to him. Shot impacted in front of near shoulder, angled through smashing two vertebrae then 3 or 4 ribs before exiting. DRT.
He's 8 now, this was his 3rd deer, took one last year with a 20g, likes the sml much better.
This load flat out shoots. Point and shoot to 100yds with just under 800 ft#s at 100, kicks like a .22.
