Before Indiana legalized center fires for deer hunting I purchased a savage model 16 in 300WSM for a donor gun for a legal .358 wildcat build for my son.Its expspensive to load for and I want to get away from it and the 300WSM all together....what calibers are available for a rebarrel job?

Can't you swap bolt heads on the Savage? That would open up options a lot.

I'm pretty sure you can. They are for sale at a number of places. I think that's the draw of a Savage Target Action: you can swap barrels and bolt heads to reconfigure a gun that is set up to fit you.

I have a model 12 and they sell the replacement bolt heads at all the major online vendors. Mine is a .243, and I have been thinking about going up to one of the wsm

If Fred Moreo of SSS (SharpShooterSupply) is still on that site he would have the answer as would a number of others.

You can swap out bolt heads on a Savage CF till your hearts content. More then likely you probly have a large shank barrel also.
You do have to watch firing pin size (where it goes thru the cross pin), prior to 2000 there was a regular firing pin and a smaller diameter "magnum" firing pin. After 2000 there is only the smaller diameter.
On some of the older bolt bodies there is a small nub on the inside and a slot cut in the bolt head. This was done so you couldn't put the bolt head in 180 out. You can just grind out the nub if needed.
There is a controlled feed bolt head also, different ejectors. If you install a push feed bolt head you have to remove the controlled feed ejector, if it had one originally.
There is some differences in lug height between regular and magnum. You just adjust the headspace
There is a difference between long action and short action bolt heads. They do not mix.
So what it may sound like is you need a short action, push feed, small pin, magnum bolt face.
Hope this helps you Rick!

just wondering, what are to trying to convert to, if I read the regs right you've got choices of 6mm rounds and 30 cal, or did they change it more The .300 WSM would be legal to hunt on private property for the next 4 years at a minimum (new .243 and .308 caliber law set to expire if not addressed again just like the One Buck Rule that was put in place as a temporary law and then made permanent). Possibly he is looking to rechamber so that he can pack it on private or public land.

The 300WSM is indeed legal.....I don't particularly care for that round and I am leaning heavily towards a .308 that is also legal

No flies on the .308 at all. Lots of ammo choices and is a solid 500yds cartridge if you need it.

No flies on the .308 at all. Lots of ammo choices and is a solid 500yds cartridge if you need it. After some research I found out that I can do any caliber I want with a bolt head and barrel change and magazine. So happy! Now I have to decide what barrel....Brux,Shilen,Pacnor and twist rate....

I've had good luck with all those brands but bad customer service from Shilen. Benchmark is also worth a look. I have one on my .308 match rifle. It has around 2000 rounds down the tube and still shoots awesome.

My vote is for a 1-10" twist.

My vote is for a 1-10" twist. What bullet weights would be suited for this twist rate?

I have shot everything from 155gn to 208gn A-MAX in 308Win and 165gn NBT to 220gn SMK in .300 Win Mag with a 1-10" twist. Generally, 1-13" is adequate for up to 175gn at high velocity, 1-11" for up to 175gn at standard velocity, and 1-10" takes care of all of it. We tested 1-8" guns a year or so back for heavy subsonic through standard velocity 175gn and it worked great too. I think 1-10" is the most versatile.
