Picked up the depredation permits yesterday and its go time! I helped my son purchase a Savage Predator Max 1 chambered in .243 last year and we took it for its first "real" range run today. It is proving to be very fond of 95 grn Winchester XPs. Following is a 4 shot group at 100 yds. First thing we ran through it! I hope this is a indication of great things to come from this rifle! Hornady 80 grn GMX. 3 shot group 100 yds

I know the GMX's are the bomb from the deer I killed with them and the deer you have killed with them. You more then me. I'd stick with those mono's as they are a real tracker, penetrator and proven killer of deer. Makes a mouse gun a rat gun real fast.
Those frangible XP's are probably fine but the mono's are unreal on deer. Lot's of experience here from you and me. Two holes, broken bones and short travels. Insane deer killers.

That gives me hope with my Remington 700 SPS Varmint which has a 1-8.125. I am hoping I can get the 105 Amax to shoot out of mine but honestly haven't messed with it since last fall. One of these days when I finish the honey do list I'll get to shoot.

I have been very impressed with the out of the box accuracy of this rifle. It is just getting broke in. I finally found some Superformance powder and will be rolling my own for it shortly.

6mm anything is a laser . I use superformance and a Nosler 55 gr 4200 fps and 8208 and an 80 gr Barnes for 3800 fps. MOA at 200 yards

I did some research of superformance and from the research I was not impressed with what I read.
Thinking I might try varget for lighter bullets. Not sure what I'd use for the 105 Amax

105gn use H4831SC or similar up to RL22. That thing is a mini magnum and will digest the same powders for similar applications.

Not sure what I'd use for the 105 Amax The second group was shot with hornadys factory offering using Superformance. It performs very well in both of my .243s. I have harvested close to 150 deer on dep. permits with this factory load in my other .243. It has out performed anything else I have tried by a long shot...99.9% DRT. With real world performance like that I will be trying it in some hand loads for sure.If it doesn't pan out I will move on.

With the mono's Tar, I would load 50/1000's off the lands to start. Or just measure one of your factory rounds and duplicate. In both my 243 with 85 gr TTSX and the 7mm Mag with the 120 TTXS, my best groups have come when the bullet has to make a big jump to the rifling. I think Barnes even recommends seating up to 70/1000's off the lands. A whole different mindset from jacketed bullets.
Wow, I knew you smoked a ton of deer over the past 4-5 years but didn't realize it was up to 150! I would call that a very good "sample size" to make a judgement on performance.

That 80gn load is really fast, like 300-400fps too fast. What charge are you loading and have you measured case head expansion?

Yes it is a 6mm rem. A junk yard gun I built on a Herders , Mauser action and a heavy 26" 1X12 barrel I picked up cheep used. That is checked speeds, using my Magnetospeed . No signs of over presser but it is at the very top for a load. Careful ! One day I'll re do it as a 6mm/06

I know it's a 6mm Rem and it's still about 300fps too fast especially with that powder. IMR 8208-XBR is on the really fast end of the burn spectrum with that bullet weight and you are generally looking at about 60Kpsi for 3500fps using that powder and a copper bullet. The 55gn load is still pretty fast but half of the overage he has on the 80gn. He is running top end loads for sure. I have a lot of experience with both the .243 Win and 6mm Rem as well as 6mm Improved and find those numbers high even if I were shooting coated bullets and using powders better suited for velocity and pressure (like H4350 or Superformance for the 80gn) and chambered with long throats. There are such things as fast barrels but I have never had one that fast.

Not sure what I'd use for the 105 Amax Not sure how it would work in your Remmy, but my 1:9.25 Savage does its best with RL17 with the 105Amax.

Slugger,
I have to agree with Freak on your load. I also have a lot of experience here. You are pushing this 80 gr bullet too fast. My buddy has a 6mm and I have a 243 and it is unlikely that either of us can tickle 3700 fps with Nosler 70 gr BT's. An 80 gr mono? You are in the danger zone Bud.
Be careful....OR maybe your speed gadget is off?? Maybe test some other "known" loads and see if your gadget is reading on the high side??
As for your 55 gr loads: This is entirely possible. I run 52.5 gr H414 with these loads in a .243 and tickle 4100 fps in the summer when it's warm. H4195 is a tad faster with less powder. In the 6mm that 4200 fps could be a real number. And what a great bullet and speed for chucks...wow. I would assume a yote or a fox would appreciate the trauma as well.
