i'm wanting to convert a 500sw encore barrel to SML for .458 saboted projectiles. anyone out here offer this plug ?? cmc don't convert anymore and ASG can't provide anything for that size chamber.....
so i'm looking for an alternative GS / machining expert !!

IMO, the Savage plug or MAYBE Pete's plug would be your answer DEPENDING on barrel diameter!!!
0.530 diameter x 2.300 long Case.
The Savage or Pete's plug has a 11/16 thread so the tap drill is in the 5/8 area. The snout will just have extra clearance since you are 0.530 vs 0.510
As long as you don't try a ridiculously small load the powder will prevent the sabot from entering the chamber area...at least on the Savage plug. If you go with Pete's which I would prefer then a calculation on minimum powder would be needed.

A guy that's on a temporary hiatus from posting pointed out that the S&W 500 is a .492/500, so probably not a great option for saboted 50cal shooting.

IMO, if it is a lapped barrel it may work well with the right bullet. When I replaced my Savage barrel I went with a 505 Gibbs 0.495/0.505 Krieger. I had only planned on using my machined sabots but found that with the very slick barrel sabots were an even better fit than with my looser Savage barrel! edge. PS if you measure the base of most sabots they are well under 0.500 Perhaps you may need the EZ load or crush rib sabots or just resize the darn bullets BUT before you spend the money and ruin the barrel you might try ramming a few bullet/sabots to be sure. If you can load them they should shoot.
