I am planning to convert my Gonic Arms GA87 Magnum in-line muzzleloader to 209 primers. I have a 209 primer adapter from an old H&R Huntsman. I will need to turn my firing pin diameter down a little to clear the rim of the 209 primer. Any thoughts on what diameter most firing pins for shotgun primers are? I would think I would want it narrower than the actual primer striking surface to prevent misfires due to any lateral "slop" in the travel of the firing pin. Any other considerations on this Conversion? Thanks

Geez man, you'r shooting a slamfire and that is OK. Love my White Bison but why change anything? If you are having ignition problems perhaps it is simpler to troubleshoot that than all that work and expense of going to 209. I use musket caps on my slamfires and almost all my "traditional" style guns. The Gonic has a problem with the spring getting weak, yours has to be getting on 30+- years old at best, and caps don't fire. Perhaps a replacement spring is what you need. Best I can do for ya now. 10 ga

I was contemplating trying BH 209. Good thought, though, on the spring. Anyone know of a source for replacement springs?

Forget the BH 209 in a slamfire. You need a closed bolt/closed ignition system, not just 209 primers to ignite that stuff. Have to build heat and pressure like a cartridge gun to get ignition. Even many of the guns with closed systems don't work if the breech plug is too long and the flame cools before reaching the powder, that is why some guns have special plugs for BH209. AND a leaking ignition system like a slamfire would be dangerous to shoot even if you get ignition, all kings of funky problems from that.
As for a new spring you might go over to Modern Muzzleloader and look, ask about. I have a friend that has a really nice White Rifle and a Gonic from back in the day. They shoot really good, for smokers. And as I said I have a White Bison. We have both been SML shooters since 06 and 07, went SML and haven't looked back. 10ga

Captain, for a hunt in CO ML season, my bro lives there and I have points, I plan to use my "traditional" style .58 "Hawkin" style rifle. It is accurate out to 150 on elk size targets with the fire and peep type sights I use now. With a PRB and 120 grains of 1.5 F Swiss it will shoot plenty good for elk. I know that would be legal for ML. For regular rifle I'll use my Rem 700ML upgrade and 325 FTX bullets. Good to 300 easy. Bro said bring the tree stands, I have 3 climbers, and in 5 days sitting over wallows I'll have plenty of opportunities at elk. I've been to CO but not for elk yet. Just shoot the Gonic with #11 or musket caps and 1.5 Swiss, It's a slammer with those big conicals. Practice at whatever ranges you think you will shoot, It will give you plenty confidence. If I were going to use a slamfire in CO I'd use my White Bison, It shoots great and kills whitetails like a lightning strike, and elk die pdq if you shoot them in the ribs. Best, 10 ga

"elk die pdq if you shoot them in the ribs"
That is true!
I shot FFG for years till Black Mag II came out because I couldn't duplicate the accuracy of FFG until Black Mag II. I just hate to go backwards! Black Mag spoiled me!
Psalm 102:3a the first half of verse 3 was my life with black powder (at least cleaning up afterward!)
