Welcome hatchet! I started like you, longtime smoker shooter then in 08 got my 1st SML. Well there is a learning curve not to be taken lightly between smokers and SML. Having an experienced SML guy to tutor and guide makes the learning much easier. The equipment available today is much, well a lot, better than when the Savage 10ML first came on the scene. This is the place to get the right info and guidance. 1st thing is where do you want to end up: just something better with longer range, easy to clean and more accurate then any factory smoker? Like easy range to 250 and little or no recoil and + - moa accuracy even at longer range than smokers? Do you want to down deer at 500 yards with 1 shot? Shoot less than moa out to 300+ yards? It's kinda different guns for different end results but they are all available or at least the knowledge and stuff to get there is. Me, I mostly just use a SML as a super smoker = better range, accuracy, dependability, easier and less cleaning, great terminal performance and less recoil than smokers would give for the same performance. Oh yes, you may become an addict and have to have more SML for more situations and kinds of hunts and shooting, well it's a great excuse to have more guns. Again welcome, 10
PS, 1st question is where do you want to go in the SML world, hunting or target, what range to shoot and what kind of game? And what kind of $ do you have to use? Big difference between a bambi blaster machine of a conversion that is minimalist but a great SML and a bench gun shooting less than 1" groups at 300 yards.
and learn to mark your loading rod!
