I picked up an Encore Pro Hunter with a couple of barrels. Of course the barrel in question is a 209x50 magnum ML barrel. The previous owner said this barrel shot great with 250 gr. TC Shockwaves on top of 70 grs. (measured) of Blackhorn209 and any 209 magnum primer. It took me three days to find a place that would order me some Blackhorn and the only magnum shotshell primers I could find were CCI. I ordered some of Noslers 300 gr. Ballistic Tip bullets which should be here next week. I have shot muzzleloaders for years and have some 3f Goex Black powder on hand along with sabots for 44 caliber pistol bullets. Would it cause any problems if I used this powder to shoot some of the components I have on hand? Would there be an issue using 3F with the magnum primers? I wouldn't mind putting together a cheap to shoot load for night hunting feral hogs locally. My shot distance would be under 50 yards so top velocity is not needed, I was thinking 80 grains of 3F and a 370 grain Maxiball or one of the heavier XTP's in a sabot. Will the 1 in 28 twist cause me any problems?

If I'm shooting a smoker all I use is pyrodex p or goex 3f. Best way to find out is go shoot some. I never had great luck with the 370maxi but for 50yds and under you should be fine. I like a wad when shooting lead too.

I have a Maxi ball mould, it has made bullets that shot well in other muzzleloaders I have used it in. Just wondering what effect a 1-28 twist would have.

If your breech plug is designated for BH-209 it will be fine if not maybe should use pyrodex or 777 I have never had very good accuracy with lead bullets in a 1-28 twist If you want cheaper bullets buy some sabots and use some 250 or 300 grain XTP Hornady bullets I think you will get better accuracy and better killing power

Palidin, welcome to the board!
The BH209 should be fine just as the black powder too. The Nosler is a very tough bullet and should be good for hogs at close range but a bit too tough for a whitetail bullet. But it will work if you put it where it needs to go. I always used regular or even magnum 209 primers in my smokers with no problems.
That maxi ball should work just fine, just remember to use a under base wad to protect the base from cutting and plenty of lube and don't shoot too hot. I shot plenty of cast bullets in my smokers, TC and Lyman, and the 28 twist is great on them. For the smoker shooting I pretty much stay with the traditional "big and slow" rule, a 300 or 350 grain soft lead bullet at 1500 to 1700 will kill most anything you can hit.
Again welcome, 10

If you start shooting BH, make sure you have a 1/8" drill bit handy to clean out the flash channel of carbon. If you don't do this, it WILL cause you problems. Use the drill bit BY HAND only. You'll chip the carbon out and you'll know when you reach the bottom of the flash channel in the breech plug. Your T/C Pro Hunter will shoot BH without any modifications to the breech plug. My last Pro Hunter had thousands of rounds of BH209 at 107grs volume (75grs weighed) and Barnes 250gr TMZ's shot through it. Wish I'd never let that rifle go.........
