Hello to all from a newbie.......I have been reviewing the threads on this board and had to join. Lots of knowledge on this site.
I just purchased a Savage 10 ML II. It is a used stainless with synthetic. I paid way too much, but love muzzleloading and believe it to be a collector item in the not to distant future. I am not new to smokeless, as I have an Ashland Innovations smokeless .45 that is on a 700 action and as impressive as any CF I own in terms of accuracy and down range energy.
I know the Savage is not quite the performer of my custom, but what should I look for regarding preparation before I take this to the range. I hate buying rifles that are used, as you never know what led to the sale nor how they were cared for. My first concern is safety, so other than breech plug removal and inspection, what should I inspect prior to firing.
Also, this is a pre-accutrigger ML II. I'm not so impressed with the trigger, therefore would appreciate recommendations on a good, safe, adjustable trigger. One other question: If I get to the point of barrel replacement, what do you recommend and what will it do to enhance the performance?
Looking forward to learning from the best...........

Hi claydog, and welcome to the forum . You've certainly found the right place to learn all you'll ever want to know about your ml 10-II. While I can't offer much help regarding the trigger on your gun (mine has the Accu-trigger) there are plenty of folks here that will get you heading down the right path. Hop on over to the SML forum and fire your questions away! As far as getting the gun ready I'd just give her a good cleaning and lube job, inspect the BP, barrel etc., make sure there are no bulges in the bbl.(obviously). Make sure the BP and Ventliner is cleaned and all carbon build-up has been removed. Wrap BP threads with Plumbers Pipe thread Tape, or cover threads with Anti-Seize, or use a combination of the two. Make sure all the screws are tightened and you're pretty much ready to roll. Seeing how you are not new to SML, you are already aware of using proven loads for the gun, plenty of info on the board for them. A basic time tested proven load for the ML 10-II is Hornady 300gr. XTP (non-magnum) / MMP short black sabot / 40-45 gr. Accurate 5744, as always start low and work up. 250 GR. xtp's are a good choice as well with similar weights of 5744, but double check the powder weights for 250's as I've only shot the 300 XTP's. A lot of good info can be found here dougsmessageboards.proboards.com/thread/51/tips-hints-read-lots-useful. Welcome Aboard! YB

Claydawg, I agree with Yankee Bill and will add a few things. Just to be certain, I would replace the ventliner. That way you are starting fresh and can make notes on the number of shots, through it. They are available from Luke and will not break the bank. As far as loads, I have used a lot of Reloader 7, in my Savage. Also, very good results with H4198, black Harvester and 310 (.458) ASG bullet. If accuracy is an issue, you may consider a wood stock and third pillar. Glad you found this site, it has great info and a super bunch of guys willing to share their knowledge. Be SAFE! Mark

Thanks Mark, Bill and Rambler........I am impressed with the knowledge on this site, but more impressed by the quality of the people! Wish I had found this site years ago. I would be much more proficient in my muzzleloading journey by now. Perhaps if we could get our politicians to join the sight, they might see first hand how listening and sharing knowledge results in a better world! ;D
I will change the vent liner as suggested prior to shooting. Thanks again.........
