As some of you may already know, I've recently started researching and looking for a 45-70 to convert to a SML. I had narrowed down my choices between the Apex and H&R with the Apex being my first choice. After checking with numerous online dealers, LGS's etc. it appeared that the Apex well was dry and that I would probably have to focus on finding an H&R if I wanted a conversion gun anytime soon, and I'm sure I would have been quite happy with one for my needs.
I wanted to try and find a new "old stock" stainless H&R if possible, but would have settled for a blued one. Turns out trying to find a new old stock H&R 45-70 is as challenging as locating an Apex presently.
Long story short, while researching some threads here regarding conversions, I came across a post from someone ( wish I could remember who ) who mentioned getting an Apex from Carlos sometime ago, and how good Carlos and Ed's Gun Shop were to deal with. I thought it would be a long shot at best but decided to look them up and give them a call anyway. I asked for Carlos when I called and told him I had heard about them on the board here, and what I was looking for. He was an absolute pleasure to deal with and when he told me he had the black model 45-70 Apex I was looking for I almost pooped my pants, then when he quoted me the great price, I almost pooped them again! I'm guessing the gun should probably arrive at my FFL in a week or so, and I couldn't be more pleased.
So, I wanted to give a big shout-out to CARLOS AND THE FOLKS AT ED'S GUN SHOP IN VASS, NC ....... YOU GUYS ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THANK YOU!
YB

Glad you found one Bill, looks like it should make a light weight build for your present hunting needs.

The 45 conversions are a blast. My H&R 45 is my favorite. When I show it to other people I say "meet my little friend"!

Glad you found one Bill, looks like it should make a light weight build for your present hunting needs. Thanks Tim. I'm shopping around for a scope now, pretty sure I want to top it with a VX-3 2.5-8 X 36. Trying to find a "Cyber Monday" deal on one today. Still contemplating which conversion to go with, but leaning towards Jeff Hankins "HIS" system at the moment. I really like the idea of using the primer modules, and the fact that they work with Extractor's / Ejector's. YB

Yeah, I was trying to see if I could couple that with anything else today. Don't think vendors will offer much else except maybe free shipping with the $100 rebate. That's still a good deal though.

YB I think the HIS takes a lot of the guess work out and you don't have to resort to using powders you are not happy , hammering a load home or duplexing .

It looked like they had the Gloss/Duplex model when I looked, and I was wanting the Matte/Duplex one. I also thought I read where the 11% discount was off your next purchase, after buying something today. I may have misunderstood I'll check them out again. Appreciate the heads-up. YB

I know mike doesn't like to read so I thought I'd give you a link to a conversation about loose loading, 4198, and no ignition issues at all. dougsmessageboards.proboards.com/thread/18173/loose-loads-ignition-shim-stockMike can you share a picture of your HIS? I found this to be an interesting repeat session as well... dougsmessageboards.proboards.com/user/3383/recent

Have they stopped making the Apex 45-70 ? I read where you had a hard time locating one.

And I'd imagine CVA will likely be ramping up production of their Varmint calibers this time of year, which would only make the situation worse for the time being. But I hope that is not the case. YB

Congrats on your first SML Buck, may you have many more to follow. This is the first time I have dealt with Carlos, and I agree, super great guy to deal with, as I'm sure many others here are as well. YB
