It is hard for me to understand why my bore gets so dirty from smokeless powder. Are the primers dirty?I use federal 209As with H4831 powder.Thanks,norseman1

I've never used that powder for anything so I can't say if it's a "dirty" powder. For example I find 5744 dirtier than most other's I've used, but this is relatively speaking. As far as primers, yes they are dirty, but there's such a small amount it shouldn't make much of any difference in the barrel...ever shot shotguns? A few years back I finally ran out of my win209's and bought 5 or 6 boxes of federal 209a's just because they are hotter. With less than one pack shot up I went back to win209's because the federals were so much dirtier in my breech plugs. Can't say I've seen a difference in the barrel though

You do seem to get more carbon, or maybe faster carbon build-up, in the breechplug when using 209As.

You do seem to get more carbon, or maybe faster carbon build-up, in the breechplug when using 209As. Makes sense since it was designed to sit just under a column of powder and send a bunch of hot material up into it. We're trying to force it through a very small hole, relatively.

What bullet are you shooting with h4831 and how big of a charge? 55 grains.A 250 grain SST smooth sized in one.Knurled in the other.A Encore with a M 26" 458 MGM barrel and a Ultimate Handi Rifle with a 24" barrel.

H4831 ??
I'm surprised you get ignition with that light of a load!! If you're sure it is 4831 that is probably a dirty load due to low pressure.
edge.
FYI Quickload predicts that less than 40% of the powder burns.

H4831 does not seem to be the correct powder choice . Perhaps you mean H4198 ? Chris

I'd go to 55gr of 4198 and see what happens. Maybe switch to Win209's also.

IMO, you should look to other proven loads! 4831 is a very slow powder ( IN A 45 CALIBER ) assuming you are 110% sure that is what it is. The other suggestions would be much more appropriate for your load and gun...IMO edge.
