Well-my wife does not like her rempac. Says it is too heavy and she wants to go back to the Encore. Since her rempac is a tack driver I plan to accommodate her wishes and taker her rifle back into my happy possession. Then we will both be happy. I know I have some barrel and breech-plug options. From what I can tell in cost order my barrel options are 1) Bergara, 2) MGM, 3) Bullberry. Since I'd prefer SS to match her frame that seems to rule out option 1. MGM twists are 1:14 which I've read here could be an issue. Which one would you guys recommend between the MGM or Bulberry or is it a toss up?
Plan is to shoot 195 Barnes with Harvestor sabots. Doubt we go sabotless and if so it would be a 250 grain.
I'm assuming that I order one with a 45-70 chamber and .458 or can I get a .451 barrel and not even have a chamber cut?
Ignition system? I'm happy with the 209s in the two rempacs I have but have had Jeff Hankins do some other work for me so his HIS system could be a winner. No real prefernece unless there is some overiding reason to not go with the 209s.
Thanks for the advice and help as always here.
Regards,
Don

I don't have much advice but if you are worried about it. I have a 14 twist that shoots lights out for me as well as I can shoot.

I'd buy a 45/70 barrel and have someone install Lukes new 209 plug. I wouldn't worry about the TR too much. Generally the fast the TR the easier it is to get a gun to shoot a wider variety of loads.

I have a 25 " Pacnor set up by Bullberry. And I LOVE IT!!! It is a tack driver. 56 gn H4198 light blue hatvester 200gn SST. I have dropped deer in their tracks at over 200 yds. But....I have an encore style plug. Works well...but there is some leakage. Since you are starting new I would look in to see if it could be set up with a rear sealing plug. Drop

I had Bullberry build a SS 45-70 with a 1-22" twist bull barrel 25" long. I had Jeff install the HIS ignition system plus build dies for it. I'm sure you will be as happy as I am with this build. You may want to contour the barrel to remove some weight.
From start to finish it was about 9 months to get it into my hands. I was neither surprised or disappointed in the lead time. Order now and you have it for deer season 2016. This will also give you time to figure out a load your build likes.

I would agree with others a rear sealing plug such as lukes209 plug or Hankins lrp plug is the way to go. I wouldnt go with1-14 twist its just to fast id definitely stay around1-20 and 25-26 " long. One thing for sure if you reduce overall weight recoil will greatly increase. The Douglas barrel has been very accurate for me.

Starting to sound like the consensus is to go with Bullberry. 25-26 inch 45/70 barrel. For someone that has two rempacs I'm a little clueless on why the barrel for a break action is chambered for 45/70. Surely they have to be machined to take the plug regardless of type so why not just buy a blank in the diameter needed and get the smith to cut the proper threads. Am I missing something?

Lukes plug in a Bergara 45/70 would be my choice. Cole could turn that around quickly.

Some buy it in 45/70 to avoid the warnings all over it. But it glass beads right off.

I'm hearing that the chamber is actually irrelevant. If I call MGM and say get I want a 25 inch .458 barrel tapered to .850 or so with the Encore lugs will that work? Then send it to smith of my choice depending on plug and off to the races.
Is .458 the best choice or .451? Seems the pacnor barrels are .451 or am I getting senile and confusing land and groove diameter? Since I'm having to size .451 and .452 bullets I'd think it wasn't .458 but---------
I do appreciate the comments.

.451 is going to be for full forming .452 bullets-no sabots will work.

I would call MGM and talk to Dillon tell him what you are after. I just had him build 2 45 cal with brux barrels and he installed Luke's new 209 plugs they should be here a couple of days

I think you are going to want a 450/458 barrel. The .450 being the grooves and .458 the lands.

Charles, Thank you. That is a great idea. I don't guess you want to sell one of those two? Just joking.

How fast do you want to be up and running? You've had feedback that the MGM option will be 9 months. The bergara option is about 3 weeks. And cheaper to boot and I will guarantee you it will shoot as well as the user. They make a very well spec'd barrel.

Anyone know who has the Bergara in stock. My normal places are out of stock and Midway isn't even taking backorders on them. MGM turn around may be as short as 4-5 weeks so I am at least going to give them a call Monday. If I can get my hands on a Bergara that will work as well. I have a buddy that wants one so both might be an option.

There were several TC and Bergara barrels on EBay a few days ago. Just search 45-70 barrel.

If you install Luke's plug - who do you send it to to get the threads cut in the 45/70 barrel?
