Have a new build in mind and am wondering what's the easiest/least painless way to upgrade the stock? Looks like Boyds has some specific stocks for this gun but I hear they need pillars installed and beaded to work well. Any other stocks that would work that are a drop fit? I'm not a really believer in spending the money to have it beaded and not sure how necessary it is as I have a Savage 6.5 creedmore that I shoot pretty good out to 800 yards that's not beaded and is in a medalist stock.

If you like the Medalist get another that will take the bigger SML barrel.

How much work does the boyds actually need to make it work well?

Looks like Boy's only has the thumbhole stocks for the 700 ml listed. Obviusly some of there other stocks work with them also. Which ones are the ones that will work? I'm not sure I want a thumbhole.

Any stock that takes a 700SA with Varmint contour.

The channel work isn't hard maybe five minutes with sand paper. I used a wooden rod from Menard's meant for a closet clothes rack and sand paper. It didn't take more than 5 minutes. The thumbhole is very comfortable and I was like you not sure about it. Honestly now that I have it I wouldn't have anything else.
I've bedded two stocks so far and hope every time I get better. It's nerve racking but they have worked. Watch as many YouTube videos and you'll figure it out, is not bad.
For about $100-$150 you could get the stock and do it yourself.

I put a boyds thumbhole on a guys savage 10ml2 and like noted above needed minimum barrel channel sanding for a perfect free floated fit. Did not bed or add pillars as the receiver and recoil lug seemed tight and it shoots great.
I don't think you can beat boyds for a quality stock at a reasonable price.

I'm on the fence with trying one of the new magpul hunters. They're a bit heavy and I already have a couple bills in my wood stock.

I just wish they were lighter, but I'm sure the weight helps them hit that price point.

I'm sure, just like that new Stocky's model that looks like and A3 but is a polymer with bedding block. It's essentially a "Glock" stock but it is priced right to make a decent budget build.
