Greetings all - I have a 20" TC Encore Katahdin 45/70 barrel converted by Slufoot with the standard Savage breech plug. I'm shooting the recommended Harvester light blue sabots and the .40 caliber Hornady 200 grain XTP bullets with good results using H4198. I'm only 25 shots into this barrel and noticing the factory bore seems quite rough. I have a couple Encore barrels in other calibers that are glassy smooth and clean easy and quick by comparison. This barrel seems to leave a lot of fouling behind and possibly tiny specks of patch material? or sabot residue? I haven't seen anything quite like this before. I've used Hoppes 9 and Kroil and ran brushes and patches through it, but it seems like it won't come clean. Not going crazy with it, but using the old routine that works quick and easy in other barrels. Wondered if any of you have suggestions for smoothing things out. I've been reading online of course about JB bore paste and various recommendations pertaining to rough barrels shot with jacketed bullets, but I'm thinking this is a different situation when you've got only plastic sabots contacting the bore. Wondered if any of you have had a similar situation - or - if it's shooting good, maybe not to worry about a bore that is not perfectly clean and shiny. Any input you may have is appreciated!

Use the bore paste or a polishing compound. The rough bore will pick up more plastic just like it would have picked up more copper if you were shooting .458 bullets out of it.

Thanks ported 45. That's kind what I thought too. If it's rough, it's going to keep picking up more of what's going through it. Any personal secrets or specific instructions on best methods for applying the paste and getting a good finish? Any concerns about loosening the bore with too much scrubbing?

Not really. Just clean as you usually do, and then follow the tiny printed instructions on the label of the paste. To get the paste cleaned out, again clean with your usual routine.
It would probably take a few thousand passes to loosen the bore. I've used Flitz which is a bit more abrasive on the factory .50 10MLII bore to the tune of 100 passes and it did not loosen the bore, just allowed the saboted bullets to go down a little easier. Didn't help accuracy, but didn't hurt it either.

Try some sabot less loads. It will surely clean up some of the roughness.

You could try some fire lapping. Checkout beartooth bullets, I'm pretty sure he sells them.

Honestly I wouldn't buy anymore factory TC barrels. Quality has really went downhill. Good thing is there are a lot of good barrel manufactures that make barrels for these things. Even the Bergara barrels are better and cheaper. I know that doesn't help you much. Sorry but TC quality has went in the toilet.

I use an auto finish product, Turtle Wax "rubbing compound" to smooth bores that only need polishing. It was recommended by Rossman 40 and works real good. 10
