I have been having a lot of blowby from the primer pocket on my new build. Brux .45 barrel on a Savage action with Luke's new plug. I have turned the barrel in until face of the bolt is all but touching the breech plug. I was still getting blowback and very difficult primer removal in spite of my adjustments. I finally cleaned the primer pocket well and installed a .015 shim I got from Luke. Instant succes, no more blowback, and easy primer removal. My question is : How long do shims last? I am assuming it has to be replaced periodically. Is it better to replace it or adjust the bevel of the plug around the primer pocket to allow more headspace adjustment , for a more permanent fix? Any advice appreciated.

If possible i would adjust headspace to have no shim or ck a industrial supply catalog and get a desired thickness shim to put on breech plug sealing shoulder to barrel.

Turn the barrel in more. Slight resistance closing the bolt down on the primer you intend to use is what your after.
If your primer measures .299 and after closing the bolt and opening and taking it out and it measures .297 or 298 you won't have any more issues with blowback.
If your currently using Federal or CCI try a Win209. They are the longest and might fix your problem.
I just reread your post. Disregard my above as it won't work unless you trimmed a little off the primer side of your plug to not use the shim since your already touching the plug to bolthead.

NĂºmero uno gripe about the savage ml. Slooooppy bolt nose. You will need a lathe and a little patience to get it where you'd like without shims. If you can get the shims to stay i'd leave well enough alone.
