I have been using Red Dot as a booster under H-4198. I am having good accuracy, but am wanting to try some Clays as a booster. Which " Clays " are you using? I have seen Clays(Hodgdon), International Clays(Hodgon), and Universal Clays. Thanks in advance for the info.

I've been using 5gr of Clays International. Looks like the flakes are slightly larger than Universal if that makes any difference for you.

I am pretty sure the loads listed are just CLAYS! Richard or TGinPA can certainly clarify.

Correct...............Just "Clays!" Although, I have shot Red Dot with the same results. Not saying that Clays International or Universal would not produce good results.......Just have not tried them. There are probably many shotgun/pistol powders that would work but who has the $$$$$ to buy them and the time to test them. This is where it is up to members to do some testing when they want some answers. If more members would test some different powders the entire board would benefit. Pick up a can? I can tell you that if you use proportions similar to the ones I have tested and that powder burn rate is in the "slower" section, you will not have a problem. Clays and RD are among the faster powders. Universal and International are slower so your good to go. A few members have tried Blue Dot and Green Dot (slower than RD) and gotten good results? Boosters are generally used to either insure ignition under cold conditions and/or cause a bullet to fatten up or "obturate" quickly. If your bullets are full formed, then you may not need the really fast boosters or even no booster. I believe that any booster with a faster burning rate than your main charge will be an advantage in bad weather. Just watch that you don't come up with a fine grained ball powder that will get into the hole in your vent liner or bushing. I have found most flake powders are OK. Also stick booster powder like 4759 and N-110 are OK. Richard

I use Clay Dot..It's Alliants version of Hodgen Clays...Between Red Dot, Clay Dot, and Hodgen Clays there's not much if any difference in velocity and accuracy....I've also used Red Dot,Unique and Blue Dot...They work as well also...It's hard to beat N110 and 4759 also....Take your pick...They all work Zen

I have used Red Dot for some testing and had pretty good results, but I prefer N110 or 4759 over the shotgun powders. The shotgun powders are much harder on bushings than N110 or 4759, unless you go with the pure tungsten. Just something to keep in mind.
