Almost all of these recent shootings including the theater incident,the shooter should not have been able to purchase a firearm legally ....I understand there are more ways to cause destruction than with a firearm,but my question is "Should the NRA step up and push for more background checks for firearm purchases so we don't All lose our firearm rights...? Something is going to happen one way or another especially with Obamaa having 18 more months to implement measures to get us politically correct with the world of no guns....Any thoughts ...?

You ask a valid question that involves protecting the rights of a legal firearm owner and adding safety to the public. Yes we have such a system here in Canada that does a background check on candidates before issuing a firearms license. It is only partially effective because it doesn’t cover all the variables such as;
- The criminal element. - No guarantee of a sane person becoming insane or temporarily insane from emotional instability.
Years ago firearms and hunting was an acceptable part of society but now appears to being rejected. Just to continue these rights is a struggle today. With the way our governments and society is constructed I see no real viable solution to this. Yes safeguards can be implemented but they are only band-aids to reduce the trauma to a wound.

Another tragedy. Not sure all the back round checks in the world would stop a mad man who gets a gun. Maybe the best way is to have 10 people who may have been legally armed where one of them could have confronted and taken on the gunman??
Back round checks are good but people can get guns whenever they want. No laws will prevent that so it's up to the armed citizen to both protect themselves in public and protect the lives of others when they can do so safely.
Here in Western NY we watch the news every morning and hear of murders and shootings in Rochester and Buffalo. I tell my wife that this can't be true?? We have the SAFE ACT where there are no more crimes. No more shootings. However, the SAFE ACT does nothing to protect the people here. All it does is restrict me from MANY things. It does not restrict the criminal intent on doing harm. I can't buy ammo on line anymore....limited to what is available in gun shops and Walmart. Not a biggie because I reload and have components to endure for a long while. But, it limits Joe Average from procuring ammo of his choice. Crooks don't care if they have ammo of choice....any ammo can do the job at 10 ft in an alley....and a few rounds or clips worth is on the streets for the right price.
This incident will help fire up the political debates on "gun control" and hurt you , me and other law abiding Americans. I say gun control is using both hands and taking dead aim.
We live in a fragile world right now. Things are bad for everyday people regarding their 2nd amendment rights. It will not get better soon and there will be lot's of pain for us before it ever gets better....if that ever happens. We need an awakening and new leaders who take the constitution seriously.
I tell everyone I know to get their concealed carry permit NOW. Get a gun and know how to use is. Carry whenever you can and be prepared to defend yourself and your family. Chances are you'll never need it BUT...when you do need it, you will not be a sheep for the slaughter of a criminal or terrorist. Yes, we have to say terrorist, because now they are here thanks to our lame A$$ president, Barak Hussien Obama, who cannot say the words "Islamic Extremists". Sad, sad sad.

Keeping guns out of the hands of the crazies is a big step. There was a thing brought up years ago to tie in mental health records to the background checks but it was squashed IIRC by the democrats who said it was a invasion of privacy. If a person is evaluated by a mental health professional and deemed a threat to himself and others then it should go before a court and it should say your rights to own, purchase and possess a firearm is suspended. But then there should also be a mechanism in place that could get the suspension lifted. Just like if you get a restraining order thrown against you by an ex, that gets pulled up in the background check and that gets you denied.
But it takes more then the current crappy mental health system. Friends and family should jump in when the warning signs become evident and alert authorities and do their part to keep guns out of the hands of someone that is on the verge of going off the deep end. If you look at the Sandy Hook, the NC church and now the recent theater shootings, the families could have prevented or at least said something.
As far as criminals having guns that has been a ongoing thing since the 1930s. I say make the laws covering criminal possession of a firearm or use of a firearm in a criminal act even tougher. Make it mandatory instead of a bargaining chip in plea deals. Crack down on the illegal sales and trafficking. We had a instance around here a few years back where NYC gang members came to local collages and got students to make straw purchases at local gunshops. These guns were showing up at crime scenes less then 3 weeks after being purchased. NYC went after suing the gunshops where the straw purchases were made. The students that made the straw purchases were made out as victims and didn't even get a slap on the wrist. But it ended up putting several small shops out of business.
