Luke, the only items I've lost always happen right here in van wert, it happens way way too often both with packages coming and going to me. Come to think about it, I did date this girl that was into witchcraft..... Oh wait I married her so she shouldn't have hexed me its also a common occurrence for me to ship 45omega something 2-3 day priority and it takes a full 7 days to get to him.

Luke your stuff makes it to me faster than Cole and he's five times closer.
I think it's going on three months and still waiting for the two BP Cole send me.

Anytime I ship with any carrier I consider it a crap shoot and just cross my fingers. Short of the steroid packing, doing what Luke does, documenting everything to the nth degree including pics and insurance is about all one can do. I also keep meticulous track of my packages in transit so I can tell when and where there might be a glitch.

Luke my point is if you don't disclose what is in the package then how do you recover for what is lost! If I say I am shipping a pipe fitting and the package is broken what am I claiming on insurance without breaking the law...it certainly is not a pipe fitting if they find it 6 months later??? edge. USPS hasn't asked me the contents of the package I am insuring for over a year; just if it is hazardous or explosive.

When UPS lost my BP they never asked me for a receipt. I listed the contents as a bolt. I also had to hound the pee out of 'em to finally get reimbursed.

I think it all depends on the declared value. They don't worry about $50 quite as much as a $2000 rifle.

Myers129: You make a good point and it applies to many hidden parts. I never throw boxes away --for a few months anyway --so I can go retrieve parts I forgot to look for.

When I ship gun parts I sply list them as machine parts. Seems no one wants to steal something to work with!

Luke, I got some resistance from the USPS on a $550 claim...I wasted so much time trying to collect, I just kept the stock.

I sort of ship the way Cole does. I keep all items bubble wrapped and with ML'ers, I like shipping in the boxes Boyds uses for stocks. I double line all the insides with an extra layer of cardboard. Every piece is fitted, bubble wrapped, empty spaces filled in with peanuts or air bags. Outside securely taped and I even nylon string secure the outside. Then the package is shipped and insured via UPS. Yes, it costs extra for insurance but worth it. I would have been out a barrel shipped to PN had I not insured it. I always send my customers the tracking number and let them know when to expect it. I also appreciate when I get an e-mail or PM advising that they got it. If not, I will contact them a day later to verify receipt of it. I list the contents, when it is a ML'er being shipped as: "Muzzle loader parts!" That is all. Richard

Richard Richard and anyone else interested, here is a handy web site I shared with Cole sometime back that is kind of an all in one tool for tracking packages:

Was this item lost? I mean if it's a $50 claim they pay it, if it gets much more than that they fight it forever.

Why would they not care to know up front like UPS? Thought your post was about identifying the insured item depending on insured amount. My bad.

I just shipped two rifles insured for $2000 each and they didn't ask what the contents were. Got my signed receipt from the driver but I would bet it would take nearly 6 months to recover my loss if something happened. The plugs and bushings that were lost in transit to kash I was told to wait 4-6 months to make sure they weren't found at one of the sorting facilities. That was a $300 claim.

If you have heavy duty plastic paint tarps you can spray expanding foam insulation into the box, then put plastic, then the oiled a wraped parts, then another sheet of plastic followed by more expanding foam. An alternative is to use plastic garbage bags and spray the foam into them...the risk is a hole in the bag and the foam will adhere to your parts and that is ugly The foam will completely fill the nooks and crannies. edge.

Cool idea. Plastic wrap first and even if there is a leak in the garbage bag the foam won't be in contact with what you are shipping.

Who has time for tape? The lesson learned is that often the heavy bullets or gun parts do sneak out of the box. Lucky for me Luke's name and address were on the bullet box and Luke didn't want to go to confession again that week.
