Thanks to all of you here, I finally got started on my sabotless journey the other day.
I smooth sized Barnes .451 Tez's until the loaded easily in my ran barrel. After 2 charges of 7/58 red dot/4198, the third one could t have been loaded in a tree stand.
Do I run a dry patch between shots, or size bullets another .0005? I mic'd every bullet, and pushed every bullet all the way down I my garage to make sure I had consistency. I did notice tighter loading pressure once I got 3/4 of the way down the barrel. Not sure if that's normal or not, but on a clean barrel with these bullets, loading was still easier than sabots.
.45 rempac, .060 veggie wad. Accuracy was plenty good for minute of deer right off the bat, I seriously doubt I will do anything but shoot this same load a dozen more times to make sure I am comfortable with the process.
Thoughts?

I choose to size for the dirty bore rather than clean it up.

I size for a dirty barrel. However last trip out I ran a couple dry patches part of the way through. It helped and accuracy improved also Drop

I also try to size for a fouled bore but in a pinch a dry brass brush could help. You would have to know this beforehand however or you might be stuck.

I shoot the Barnes 290gr TEZ without sizing in my Stevens 45 McGowen it is 450-458. I use 69gr of IMR4198 a lubed wad 290gr TEZ unsized with a Win209. I have not clean the gun since I build it. The Red dot might be your problem so try a lubed wad and see if it helps.

I shoot the 290 TEZ all day long without cleaning. You must size for a fouled bore. What I do is when I get home, I leave the bore fouled for maybe a couple of days while I am working on sizing different bullets. This way I have a fouled bore to test them. I also have a 6" barrel drop that is clean and I also use this to see how a bullet feels in a clean bore. Last Tuesday was.......I think, 33 shots without cleaning ---- the week before about the same number? I am constantly using the cool rod to reduce barrel heat and after taking the rod out, I follow with one dry patch (used over and over the entire session). So that would be the closest to cleaning I do. Richard

Richard, are you no longer cleaning your bore between weekly sessions? If so why do you still take a fouler shot?

What gave you that impression? I said I leave my barrel fouled "for a couple of days" for the purpose of trying the fit of newly sized bullets....................Then, I clean it. I clean every week or about every 30 or shots. Cole.............I need that can of "dust off again!"

Smallass: welcome. You were just about to get your barrel fouled. Two more shots (5 total) on a new barrel and you could size your bullets. I clean barrels every two years or after poof shots or dropping into dirt or getting wet.

Duplicate however you hunt. If you hunt with a clean cold barrel then duplicate that on sight in process. If you want to hunt a cold dirty barrel duplicate that on the sight in. Every one of my guns likes something just a bit different cept the ones that shoot best dirty, they get dirty bore early and stay that way all season. exterior gets cleaned. for really bad weather I use my SS guns and they all like to be clean so that happens. Just my experience, yours may be different. 10

I tend to agree Size to a fouled bore. I suspect the majority here tend to hunt with a foul bore.
There is a point where tight is right and tight is too much.
Find a happy medium between tight and tight.

Edge or other Moderators: I'm requesting that you ban Richard from this Board. He has just tried to change the subject from barrel fouling to "which losers out there never post groupings on targets". He is also firebombing or fireballing or whatever, but insulting guys like me and Fishawk who shoot flyers every third shot so it is embarrassing to post targets.

Cowhunter doesn't even have an SML. He copy and pasted one of swing-locks guns and claimed it's his. I know this because I talked to him about a build and he is clueless he also told a tall tale about koa blanks once that fishhawk and I bit on and now we are out many sleepless nights thinking about made up fancy stocks.

I just tried sabotless the other day shooting 10gr 4759-50gr 4198 and shot 10 shots without cleaning I couldnt tell much difference in loading pressure so maybe it is the red dot. Hope you get it figured out.
