This is not for my MLII, but I know you guys know your stuff regarding savages...so I am building a 280 AI for hunting rifle, and it came as a Stevens 200, so no accutrigger--crappy stock trigger only. What is your favorite replacement now? Seems like SSS Competition over the Rifle Basix SAV-1? Any other players in that price range I should look into? Looking to spend about $100 or so, so in the range of those 2 triggers...

Tough to beat the SSS Competition trigger. Multi-lever design like the Rifle Basix SAV-2. The sear is not in contact with the trigger but a intermediate lever so there is no sear pressure directly on the trigger. If your going below 3lb the SSS or the SAV-2 would be the ones. I've set a lot of the SSS up on hunting guns with super light (2lb or less) but added a tad of sear travel for safety. About the only drawback is they like to be clean.
With the aftermarket triggers like the SAV-1 and the Timney your just replacing the trigger and you still have to deal with sear pressure. With the factory trigger you can take out the trigger spring and still have over 2lbs of trigger pull just from sear pressure due to a slightly positive sear engagement angle. What the aftermarkets do is to go more with neutral sear angle (maybe even a tad negative) which isn't the safest. A good test with the SAV-1 or Timney is to work your safety a few times, depending on adjustment, the hammer will drop before you reach 10 times (usually 4 to 6). True your not going to work your safety that much but a neutral sear angle will also make the trigger more acceptable to going off if dropped/shocked.

I cant compare to some of the other aftermarket triggers as i have not owned them, but i have had a SSS trigger is my gun for the last 3 or 4 years and have had no problems with it. It has been reliable and consistent.

The old style savage trigger is easily modified with a different spring and polishing the sear.

I have 3 Rifle Basix SAV-2 triggers in my rifles. I have had no issues with any of them, I have over 3000 shots on one of the triggers.

If you can find a older savage 3 screw trigger you can adjust engagement and with a little polishing compound have a good trigger,, I have done so to a few stevens 200s

My Savage MLII (non accutrigger) has a Timney in it, I like it a bunch. It's a big upgrade vs. the factory trigger that was in it.

I have used the SSS, Rifle Basix and Timney, all are a big step up from the accutrigger, my gun has a SSS in it and is my favorite in the Savage..

I have not used others but like the SharpShooterSupply (SSS) trigger. You can adjust the factory trigger but be careful, I got one too light and to say the least it was a problem. That is when I got the SSSs.
