Has anyone here shot Hawks Bullets? I see they have some 458 Bullets that a guy could possibly full form. Wondering if anyone has any experience with them?

I thought Richard tried some recently. I have never had very good accuracy with the Hawks I tried. I do appreciate they are willing to give us some different offerings however. Others results may vary.

Check my shooting report on the Brux barrel and you will see some poor 300 yard results. A couple looked pretty good last week at 100 but this week at 300 they were terrible. It might just be the load? I may have kicked them too hard? Sometimes it takes a bit of playing around to find a load that suits a bullet. Right now, I happen to have a few bullets that are working good for me. I still have about 14 of those 300 gr. .458 Hawk's left and may re-visit them at another time. Richard

I had some reserves about the bullets. Just finished building my full form die and looking for some 458 bullets to try. I recently shot the 325 FTX bullets and they shot decent for my abilities. Thanks for your detailed reports. They are very helpful.

One more data point for Hawks bullets.
When I was experimenting way back when with the Savage .50 cal. I put a request in with Hawks for some .503 bullets so I could try to shoot sabotless with my Savage. I did get in on a run and when I got them they mic'd at .502. So I knurled them up a bit and put a wad behind it and hit it with N110 43 to 47 grains. I never could get them to shoot worth a darn no matter what I tried.
Hope this helps,

I sent Hawk an e-mail on June 10th. questioning them about the softness of the lead and copper and whether copper fouling could be a problem? I indicated that I was using them for SML'ing.............No response as of yet? Richard

Last summer I tried to get some specs on bullets before I ordered any and they basically told me whatever they come out to is what you get. The sales person would not measure any stock bullets for length of bearing surface, total length or anything. So needless to say I told them I would get bullets elsewhere.

Hawk bullets use the same process as the Barnes Originals. The jackets are formed from a copper tube instead of a punched cup. That's why you see a small hole in the base. For some reason it effects long range accuracy, more so when pressures go up. Perhaps lead squirts out of the hole in the base causing a imbalance or the thicker and softer jacket has something to do with it. I know of one guy that tried both the Hawks and the BOs in a .458 SOCOM and went back to the plain jane Remington 300gr JHPs. Some of the long range BPCR guys didn't think highly of the Hawks ether.

A search here or on the old board should turn up a lot on them. I know they were tried in the past without much success.

I had both the 260 and the 300 gr versions as did Herman and we could never get them to shoot well. Of course, that was all .50 with sabots. Richard

Richard may have forgotten, back when we got the Hawk bullets to try in the .50's, he checked the meplats and they were very inconsistent. Sure that does nothing to help with accuracy.
I shot them saboted in the .50 and sabotless in the .45, both results were poor.
