I've often been puzzled about the Encore in comparison to the Contender for accuracy. Some Encores shoot extremely with no mods at all. Some require oversize hinge pins, special forend bedding and on and on to shoot well. The Contender on the other hand just shoots lights out regardless of loose hinge pins or whatever. I've had 14" Contenders in numerous cal. that just amazed me. I currently have a Slufoot Encore 45-70 conversion that shoots very well but I've tinkered with the forend screws, installed a over sized hinge pin, trigger work etc. to get it there. They are basically the same gun other than size. Just wonder what makes one seem to be inherently accurate and not the other.

I have never owned one,but my friends have ,and there are shooters and some that would not group....barrel quality and any effect all the welding of the lug, alignment, hinge problems, trigger smoothness, etc. seem to come up as issues with problem encores..

I have a TC Encore .50 from first year of production. i did several things to get mine shooting good. Here is a list. Heavy Hammer Spring and spring kit from Mike Belm's Locking hinge pin Added spacers to forearm to relieve barrel contact Relieved "forearm ears" to eliminate forearm to frame contact Slightly Shortened buttstock frame screw to allow for more torque and eliminate contact of the strutt
Shortened barrel by an inch or so to remove QLA and re crowned Heavy one piece steel base from Match Grade Machine Leupold Mark 4 rings Replaced breech plug with 2 different ones from Cecil Epp one was for 25acp cases and the other was for cutoff .308 size cases. The latter allowed for LRM primers and works great with BH209. I plan to convert it soon to Jeff Hankins HIS Plug. If I do my part the gun shoots 1 MOA consistently. Kyle

Bigiron, if any of your Contenders are vintage, just compare them with an Encore. There was a LOT more company pride from the engineering level down to those who made them and put the Contenders together than the Encore. The old Contenders were a work of art....T/C really did a great job with them. A neighbor has one in .223 which is about as accurate as any bolt action. By the time T/C started making the Encores, it's apparent (at least to me) that top consideration went to $$$$ rather than quality of workmanship.
That being said, I have two Encores. One needed no extra work at all, but it has a custom Tactical 20 barrel with a forearm sporting a hanger system. As long as the forearm screws on the hanger are not torqued too tight, that barrel starts out accurate and stays that way during a practice session. Then there's the other one in which I had to do many of the same steps as Kyle to get it to shoot decent, but nothing to brag about.

I am gonna say it's all in the barrel. I have been an Encore fan and owner since 1998. I have had two barrels that were duds, a 22-250 rifle and a 454 Casull pistol that I never got to shoot. Just changing barrels and screwing on the same forend, mounts and scopes, others shot great, hence why I say it's all in the barrel. ALL others I have owned or got going for others have been great. It will forever be my all time favorite setup. I do not have a smokeless Encore mz setup, but I am wanting to get that project going sooner than later. Pretty light for a big boomer though.

when building a slm from a center fire blank , cam sight base be welde d on like the locking lug , would it be stronger than drilling ? just a thought homebrook There has been much discussion over this question. I talked to a guy at Krieger and he wouldn't really commit to an answer. Some say it's possible with a low heat style of weld. I don't know...wish it could be done. If a locking lug can be welded with no averse affects why not a scope base?? I do not have the answer.

I have a smokeless ML using a encore frame with .45 cal krieger barrel, it has a 1" straight taper barrel with a welded scope base moved forward 2 " to accommodate better scope eye relief. The extra weight forward helps with recoil and it stays around 3/4 moa @ 100 yards. I have harvested several whitetails out to 400 yards with it and very pleased with the gun.

I have not had an Encore that either shot well from the get go,or could be made to shoot. If you do a Bellm trigger job.Add O ring washers as spacers on the forearm to free float it and relieve the ears and use a EA Brown expanding hinge pin,you will have not spend $100.00.What other rifle now made can you accurize for that amount of money?

As I often do sometimes I speak before I think, the base is only tig welded at the back it does not have any weld forward or equal to the bullet setting in the Lands, I checked it today at lunch

All four of my Encore ProHunter 45-70 conversions will print 3 shots at an inch or just a tad over an inch at 100 yards.
Only modification has been an expanding hinge pin. For what I use them for 300 yards and most of the time 50-100 yards they are a pleasure to carry around.

Cheytac: who converted the Kreiger barrel for your Encore and then welded on the scope mount, and how much did they charge? That is the ideal conversion for an Encore I would think.

Off-hand, I can think of four in my possession, but that's getting off the subject at hand. Off hand t,ell us about the currently made models you can do this for under $100.00??? Three Savage VLP's. Bedding job. All they really needed was bedding around the recoil lug for something solid to recoil against, but I did full bedding jobs on all of them. Total cost for all three was less than that C note. One CZ455. $70.00 for trigger and pillar kit. I bedded the pillars with less than $5.00 worth of mud. All four shot better than prior to "accurizing". They just needed a little more stability. Two of the VLP's have shot 1/4" groups, but that's got just as much to do with reloading fire-formed brass, bullet depth, powder, etc., as it has to do with a decent rifle.

Got a Slufoot conversion right now on a T/C 45/70 barrel. Did absolutely nothing to it and it keeps 1/2" group with the XTP's, but I have not put more than one Barnes through it to see how it groups them. Although that one Barnes stayed in the 1/2" group with the XTP's with 60 grains H4198. I am beyond pleased with Slufoot's work and its results.

Norseman1 you said "add O ring washers as spacers on the forearm to free float " are the rubber orings on the barrel side or under the head of the forearm screws? DannoBoone mentioned "forearm sporting a hanger system." Can someone Educate me on what a Hanger system is? Is the Hanger a DIY or purchase? pics? Read more: dougsmessageboards.proboards.com/conversation/122477#ixzz3inX39NrNAlso , I Called Bellm earlier this week regarding trigger Job..... Just trigger job is now 135.00 plus my shipping there. More like 142.00 now to have Bellm. Its now 85.00 for the job and they (Kurt) require a 50.00 ADMIN fee for logging your gun in and return shipping. I consider that 50 a rape and pillage charge.... I am an ffl and logging in a gun takes me 2 minutes tops without coffee yet. Shipping an Encore receiver back to me can't be more than 20 insured.... As such I will opt to have someone else local do the work. I don't mind paying for quality work but that fee is over the top IMHO.

Just do the trigger job yourself, its not hard, unless, you have a problem working with small parts. I used to do them all the time and at one time could do them very quick. It'll take more time to hone the sear than to disassemble and reassemble. BY THE WAY........... If you check on Mike's site, he has FREE directions (w/photos) for DIY'ers. Mike has in the past, welded locking bolts for a completely tight fit IIRC.

Totally agree. The directions made the trigger job on my "problem" rifle totally doable. Back then, Mike did not offer the pliers which I would recommend buying to anyone thinking about a DIY trigger job now, but I eventually got that derned spring in place without having them.

I ordered one of the kits and a trigger spring that gives me about 1.7 pound pull. It was on the edge of my ability but if I can do it most others can. My two friends liked the trigger so much they made me do theirs

My encore is at 3lbs seems about right for a hunting trigger.
I do need a hammer spur, anyone have any recommendations?

Get an aluminum spur. Less likely to bend your hammer. A steel spur will bend a hammer. I know. There are some on ebay most of the time.
