Hello all, this is my first post so please bear with me. I've been using this site as a research platform for about 6 months and finally decided to jump in.
I am going to build a SML on an Encore frame. This will be a hunting rifle and I will probably shoot it 10 times per year after getting familiar with it.
I have a Bergara 45/70 on order. I am wanting to use a primed case breechplug from Pete because I think the primed cases will be easier to handle than 209s, but I'm seeing some posts where members have suggested the primed-case plugs should be used with lugged actions only. My immediate question is.... can I use Pete's "new style Remington" plug or some other type of cased plug on an Encore Frame? If the answer is "no," then I will probably get Pete's Encore replica plug.
If the answer is more complicated than "no" or "yes," what is the main drawback from using the cased plugs with an Encore frame? Is it due to complications with head-spacing?... blowback? Any help or info is appreciated.
Thanks,

IMO, as long as the rifle is designed as a centerfire then you are good to go.

DSS Custom Rifles makes and converts exactly what you are talking about but with a Knight breech plug, musket nipple system for shortened cases. Personally I like the HIS system better.

Thanks for the replies guys. I got a lot more to think about now. Never hurts to have options. I'm liking the HIS system. Pretty much falls in line with what I was wanting and it appears to eliminate a lot of case prep work. I really like the possibility of him installing his own system as well. I'm a little worried about module availability on down the road but as much as I shoot, 25 modules would probably last me 5-10 years.
Again, Thanks for the info. If anyone has an additional info they would like to share please keep it coming.

Mr. Fairbanks I have converted several of these barrels and at the present time I am making a new plug designed for the encore and apex rifles.. This system will use the same priming modules as my other system does so I can keep parts to a minimum.. As for getting the modules.. If you're only going to shoot your rifle 20 times a year the the supplied 25 modules will last you 62.5 years if you don't loose them.. If you ever need more all you got to do is order some more and I'll ship them out to you... Call me if you have any other questions., I'll be glad to help you out.. Jeff Hankins...

I had Jeff convert a Bullberry Encore 45-70 barrel using his breech plug and ignition system. I could not be happier. If I was to do it again I would do the same thing over again.
Use the search function and you should be able to find some threads plus search YouTube for Jeff's videos on the Encore conversion.

If it was me, I would go with a 209 system. Maybe modules would be a little easier to handle, but you're going to have to have extra equipment to prime them when you could just be pulling 209's right out of the sleeve. Don't get me wrong, the HIS system will work fine. But IMO the whole idea behind a Bergara 45/70 conversion is economical and simple. You're not going to be hot rodding or anything with it. If installed correctly, the break action conversions headspace off the nose of the 209primer, so you will see zero blow back.

And I agree with the economical and simple theory.
I pretty much decided to go with Jeff's HIS system. For the price he states on his YouTube video, he gives you 2 plugs, 25 modules, installs the plug, and ships it all back to you. I think in his video he even mentions trueing up the crown if necessary. To me, that's a pretty good deal. Also, he promptly returned my call and after talking to him about the build I am even more confident in my decision. He was not only knowledgeable but enthusiastic about getting me up and running.
I'm not worried about the reloading part. I have 3 kids and sneaking off to the reloading bench helps me keep my sanity.
Thank you all again for the input.

I use 209, and keep a good supply. I have noticed that 209 become scarce around here near gun seasons. The LRP are almost always available. Just FYI
