Well, the lil girl really had the itch to shoot her gun, so I spent this morning sizing bullets and loading up some new powders to try out. I wanted to shoot her gun as well, cause it's been sitting loaded since deer season and I wanted to see if it would go off and where it would impact, since it was sighted in, in November when the temps were pretty cold and today it was 85, humid and breezy.
The first shot impacted exactly where I would of hoped if it were still deer season, pretty close to where we had it sighted in, dead center and high. So that was exciting, I believe that load was 7/49 or 7/50 of 4759/Varget. I'd have to look at my notes to be certain.
Then I loaded her up with 5/40, RD/RL-7, 155 XTP, Wool wad, Fed primer.
I sized these way too tight, I had to HAMMER them down.. (I blame this on not being able to push a bullet down the barrel when checking for fit, being that it was loaded) Not the best group in the world but shots 2 and 3 cut the same hole, idk if it was the gun/load or her.. These 3 shots averaged 2625 fps.
Next up was 5/45, RD/H322, 180 XTP, no wad, Fed primer, once again, I missed the sizing, these were Hammer downs too. Accuracy was not there with this combo. Velocity averaged 2482.
Next up was 5/50, RD/Benchmark, 200SST, Wool wad, Win 209 primer. This was her best group and this combo definitely shows promise. This bullet pushed down easily with one hand, (learned it liked this fit last fall when testing SST's) Velocity averaged 2421.
Next up was 7/40, RD/10X, 200 SST sized 2 hand snug, no wad, Win 209 primer. It started up not looking bad but she pulled the 3rd shot, I knew it and she did too. Velocity averaged 2369. We may try this load again and try with a wad too.
Next up was 10/47, 4759/N140, 195 Barnes, Wool wad, Win primer. Not the best but a little tweaking to take the vertical out and it may be a winner. Velocity averaged 2340.
After 16 shots and 5 trips down to swap targets, she had had enough. So I figured I'd try one group of another flavor since we were set up.
The load I tried was 7/50, RD/3031, 200 SST, Wool wad, Win primer, 1 hand snug loading pressure. Not too shabby for the sun blaring in my eyes, not to mention all the sweat and the fact I'm not allowed to shoot this gun very often. ? Average velocity was 2440.
Not the best range day ever, but not the worst, got some testing in on some different powders and the lil girl is much happier now that she got to shoot her gun. I didn't tell her I was using her as a guinea pig to try out these powders. All in all it was a good day, minus the heat. I thought we were gonna melt the barrel down, we weren't waiting any between shots, except during target changes.
For anyone unfamiliar with this gun, this is her 20" barreled Rempac 392/400 that Cole built her last fall. It wears a Boyd's Tacticool stock, Rem 700ML action, Timney trigger, Weaver Classic Extreme scope in a DNZ mount.
