So one of the reasons I post is cause then I can go back and see what I have done or not. Going back threw my post I found that it's been mentioned numerous times to try veggie wads. Being the cheap person I am I talked to my rebuild department into making me a wad cutter. I can get thin pieces of cardboard at work and thought they would work as a so called veggie wad. So they made me a tool to cut wads and here is what I came up with about 20 wads so far. Not sure this piece of metal pipe will last long but the theory is good. Maybe Jeff, Cole, or one of the other lathe workers could make some wad cutters to sell with all their other fine tools. Just a thought. As long as everything goes well I'll be trying this out tomorrow.

Good idea, I've had the same thought for a long time and have been making some wads for a while. The punches are already in production, I use a whole punch for gasket material. They work perfectly, I have a set of gasket hole punches and use gasket material to make the wads. I can punch out perfect wads for the 40 cal and for the 45. Not sure of the name brand of the hole punches off the top of my head, but they are out there, and the gasket material is almost identical to a veggie wad in feel and appearance. Then nice thing is, you can get MANY thickness's of gasket material to experiment with. Not sure it's any cheaper than just buying them somewhere, but it's something to do on a rainy day.

Can't remember what the cost was but I think it was dirt cheap enough to make home made obsolete:

Is John back to making them? He lives in the town of Moore, which was virtually all destroyed a couple of years ago in a tornado. I had tried calling him and got no answer. I figured he was also wiped out. Here's some more good info: www.circlefly.com/html/products.html
I emailed John to see if he's still around. I ordered 1000 .060 wads from him last summer, at least I think I did, it may have been from a 2nd party vendor.

I'd like to have one just because I have everything else I can think of and there are so many viable materials that could be tried out....I ran out of veggies the other day and have not restocked....I have wool wads which work good but if I had the punch I could make what I needed in a pinch .....
Ohioguy....is there a name brand for the gasket punch set..?

I'm thinking about canceling the order on the wads. I'm going to order some Flex Seal from Phil Swift. Kyle

I guess I can see it being cheaper or more cost effective to just buy the wads. For me my late grandfather made his own wad cutter and would use the styrofoam egg cartons to make wads for his old CVA muzzleloader. He found the Styrofoam wads gave him the best accuracy. He was always making things and trying them out and wad the person who got me into shooting muzzleloaders. So for me I really enjoy reliving his love of the sport and tinkering. Spent some time at work tonight and have made about 150 wads and while I was doing that my back molar tooth broke apart while chewing on a potato chip so no range time tomorrow. Dentist here I come

Just spoke to John Walters and he is still in business at the contacts I listed above. $20.00 per 1000 plus $1.00 shipping. He said midway sells his stuff along with some other vendors but they can be bought direct from him as well.

My wad cutter is cheap and simple. I use a "spent" 45-70 case. Pop out primer and drill out primer pocket for a threaded screw. Fit the screw through from the case and add a nut and tighten up so the screw is a mandrel. fit in a drill and just "drill" wads with the mouth of the case. I drill a hole in the side of the case near the base and use a wire to push the wads out of the case. A bit of sandpaper or light file on the case mouth and it cuts like a dream. Cheap and easy tool for cheap wads of your choice. i prefer the cardboard like in 12 packs. Oh yeah a good hard wood base is necessary or you cut up whatever is backing. $.02 10 ga

Rambler.................Harbor Freight is definitely good for some stuff but $9 for that set of punches? ? They have got to be made in China from recycled American cars ............Be dull before you know it. Even with shipping the wads from Track of the Wold were less expensive than John's price. Had Moore OK not got wiped out, I would still be buying them from John but when his business lapsed I found the other outfit. Richard

Call him or email at the contact info listed earlier and he'll send the wads with invoice and you can send him a check. Good guy to work with.
