Well Guys... The second Challenge has came and gone and with this event now over and everyone back home and rested for a day I will list the match results. Below is a group photo of all the guys that came to the shoot, so now you can put a face with the name....

Overall Match winners...
First place,, Goes too... Kyle Pittman with an average MOA of .869 Kyle was shooting a Hankins Custom Rifle with the HIS ignition system, using large rifle magnum primers, 275 grain BE's and IMR 4198.
Second place,, Goes too... Tanner Hudgens with an average MOA of 1.130 Tanner was shooting a Hankins Custom Rifle with the HIS ignition system, using large rifle magnum primers, 275 grain BE's and IMR 4198
Third place,, Goes too.... Bill Travis with an average MOA of 1.592 Bill was shooting a Barreled action built by Hankins Custom rifles with the HIS ignition system. Bill did all the stock work and finished this rig up.. Bill was shooting 300 grain BE's and IMR4198.
Forth place,, Goes too... Mark Bruckelmyer with an average MOA of 1.692, Mark was shooting a Savage Target Action with a 28" Brux barrel and the Savage breech plug system, shooting IMR3031 and 310 grain APB bullets.
Fifth place,,, Goes too... Lane Preston with an average MOA of 1.873, Lane was shooting a Remington 700 ML with a Krieger barrel and the Savage breech plug system, assembled by Myers129. I do not know his loads.
The only shooters for the weekend that stayed in the top five for all three matches was Kyle Pittman and Tanner Hudgens. A big congratulations to them for that. Mark and Lane did not place in the top five of any match but was able to place in the over all best MOA's because they held it together all the way to the 300 yard line,, A big congratulations to them for that. Had Bill placed I the top five for the 200 yard match the outcome would have been a totally different story.
With the massive down pores of rain we had to shoot through I would say we had some pretty impressive groups.,, Some of us had to shoot when you could barely see the target, others got lucky and was on the firing line when the rain had let up some, but that was all in the luck of the draw, we managed to stay dry and keep our rifles and shooting supplies dry., so all was good for the day...
I hope to see everyone again at the next event along with some new faces....

The weather did increase the challenge.
With the 100% humidity Bestill said the BH209 fouling turned into like a tar or gum in a few hours. His quick fix was to fire another fouler if the gun sat very long.
Deadeye's groups went south so he was pulling his hair out trying to figure out what was wrong. Deadeye is a deadeye! He is a excellent trigger puller. It looks like he might have warped his brake.
Half of the shooters stayed under MOA thru the course. It was impressive to watch a little side shoot that was banging the gong at 350yds freehand standing. The 350 gong got a pretty good work out during the weekend. Hillbill and Deadeye was popping small balloons at 350 and 375yds.

Another great Shoot missed. I hope third time is the charm. I had big money ridding on Hillbill. What the heck happened to his 200 yard group? He was probably asleep in his camper and no one bothered to wake him. Great shooting in the rain everyone. Mighty impressive. I'll bet the average center fire owner can't shoot those groups.

Something to be said there about centerfire rifles not keeping up. Those are some darn impressive groups for some front stuffers. Dare I say it? There seems to be a recurring theme going on here. Brux Barrels! HIS ignition systems. IMR 4198 and BE's . Wanna stick with a winner? Stick with these winning combinations IMHO. |

Or was this a maintenance issue and would a simple swabbing of a dry patch taken care of this? I know from my own experience with BH209 that if you try and wet swab before you dry swab the barrel you will get that tar or gummy feeling with BH209. BH209 leaves a soot type of residue behind. A dry patch will remove the excess "soot" and then you can follow up with wet patches. If you start out with wet patches you are going to find yourself with a gummy bear feeling of sticky mess. I can recall shooting up to 50 rounds in a single range session with BH209 without swabbing. At home I ran a two dry patches down the tube to flush out the soot. Followed by wet patches of Hoppes #9. All was clean. During normal hunting seasons I usually will fire 1 or several rounds during the course of a hunt and bring it home and swab with a dry patch followed by a wet patch of Hoppes. Ive never had a issue like you describe so I am sort of curious as to Deadeyes condition Sat. Thanks in Advance for any information you can provide. |

The first two were in the same hole but you didn't put enough money down so my heart skipped a beat and I pulled it bad.
All kidding aside, having never shot in bench rest when the heat is on and everyone is looking down your shirt collar after you put two in one hole I just flat out choked. Too much pressure for an
ole man!
Next time:
Different scope, different trigger and no lead sled. Yes Richard I was shooting off a lead sled?
Will be back in the fall for round three,....

If you want to make new friends or put faces with names, BE THERE!
The most fun I have had since the last shoot...
If you need to gain about 5 lbs then make the trip, the cooking was great,just bring plenty of bullets and powder to waste, this stuff is very addictive...

My gun was a Savage Target action with a 28" Brux and old Savage bushing plug, shooting 85 gr. IMR3031 with a 310 APB.I started the weekend with 90 grs but was bulging primers so had to back it down.I drilled out the fc when I got home. I try it today to see if it fixed my primer issues.
Had a great time and talked to some new friends and eat some very good meals.

This is what we decided happened to Deadeyes brake... His brake is a popular tactical style design and is .875 in diameter.
I installed it about two years ago and Deadeye had been shooting 4198 powder through it up until a few months ago. He switch over to experiment with 4831 a much slower burning powder. We,, being.. Rossman, Hillbill, Deadeye, Xring, Kyle, and myself determined that the pressure curve was at or near the muzzle with the 4831 therefor causing the brake to go egg shape. The brake stretched in the weak spot and that is in the webbing area of the brake.. Deadeye discovered this because the funnel I made for him to load through the brake was slowly getting tighter and then it got to the point where it would not go into the brake at all, he then had to remove it each time to load and it got worst. The funnels I make are a precision fit so that you can slide it into the brake and it will line up perfectly with the bore of the barrel. You can then drop the sized bullet down the funnel and push it down with the ram rod without ever having to remove the brake. My exit hole through the brake is .500 the stem on the funnel is .499 so any dimensional change will cause an interference fit.
This has happened to two brakes of the same design, both of them were at the shoot this weekend so we were able to examine both of them at the same time. One I installed and one Rossman installed. Both times the brakes did not go egg shaped until the shooter started using 4831. Did the slower powder cause the swelling of the brake,, we think it did, so all you fellas with tactical brakes start paying attention to the ID of your brake and what powders you shoot. Let us know if any of you experience the same problem.
I am making Deadeye a new brake, but this time he is going with a standard radial brake....

Everyone there was very impressed with bestills' little gun. The ultimate smoker? I think so, and it shot some impressive groups. Make no mistake, when it comes to blackhorn 209 and accuracy, he be the man....

I know from my own experience with BH209 that if you try and wet swab before you dry swab the barrel you will get that tar or gummy feeling with BH209. BH209 leaves a soot type of residue behind. I must commend Kyle for his consistent tight groups, he did his home work before he came and took his time and stayed cool when trigger time came.he never once bragged about being top gun, thats just the way he operates. after watching him shoot last year with a very new gun I knew he would be a contender.
Thing is, I dont think anyone came to kick butt, just to have fun. I think everyone did and I also think everyone learned from each other.
look for ever tightening groups in the future as we all fine tune our deer sticks and our bench skills.

I hope to be in that "Most wanted" picture next year. Looks like you guys had a blast and did some impressive shooting despite the rain. Probably kept the methane gas from the human booster charges under control. . Your a good man for hosting such an event Jeff. Hats off to ya. Joe |

I don't think the bulging of the brake is the fault of the brake itself. I think it's because it is to small in diameter and not enough material left in the gill area to stop it from going egg shape.. I think this would (will) happen to any gill style brake if it is turned down to small. So,,, for anyone wanting a gill style brake on their 45 caliber don't buy one that is .875 in diameter. Start with at least 1.0 inch and turn off just enough when installing it to make it concentric to the barrel and bore. So it might finish out at .990 or so.
The same brake we had problems with would work fine with a 30 caliber hole through it but with a 45 caliber hole it takes away to much of its strength,, this goes for all style brakes., radial or tactical style.. You must leave enought material to withstand the pressures created at the muzzle over and over again... If you turn them to small you will blow them completely off the barrel...
So it's not the maker of the brake, it's making sure you get the proper size for your application...

You are going to have a gummy mess on your hands. The trick is to run a dry patch first to get the soot out. Maybe two if its really heavy fouled. Then follow up with your wet patches of your choice of conventional bore powder solvents. I like Hoppes #9. Ive used others that are far more expensive that are good but Hoppes does a decent job with BH209. |
