Very Nice!
How was loading pressure?

I have tried some higher charge weights of 4198 but this seems to be the best so far. Loading pressure was a light but firm two hands.

Myers built you a very nice rifle but since you went to all the time and money to build a high performance 45Cal muzzleloader why are you shooting XTP bullets and BH209 powder. You have a match grade rifle there. Shilen 45cal barrels love 250GR and 300GR SST bullets. They really love 270 E-Max Parker bullets.
Make life simple load 70grs of IMR 4198 with 300gr bullets and a CCI mag 209 primer or the Federal 209A and a good heavy wad and it will shoot much better than that. 250,275 BE or 270 E-Max put 73grs IMR 4198 and the same primers and wad and you will be amazed how well that gun will shoot. I have found the Shilen barrel will shoot sized bullets without the wad but the loading pressure is more critical. It would be all right for a second follow up shot in a hunting type condition.
There is no doubt in my mind that a Shilen .457 1-20 twist barrel will shoot. They are a top quality barrel and the delivery time has run on average 4-6 weeks every time I place a order. I have 6 more on order but they are all sold.

Why did you go through all the time to build a BR specific muzzleloader and then shoot bricks out of it??? Everyone is free to do what they want with their rifles. I only did the barreled action which shows that the owner did a fine job fitting and bedding his stock on this one.

Myers you can't seem to understand when someone is giving you a little praise about the work you did. And for your information I normally always shoot Parkers in all my muzzleloaders at distances greater than 300 yards. Shooting the 300gr SST was strictly a test to see how they would do at that distance and to see if the B.C. would match what Hornady claims. Which it did.
Also in my post I stated that the 300gr SST is maxed out at 600 yards. The terminal performance would not be as good as a Parker would be. But there are a lot of guys that can't afford Parker bullets to shoot all the time. This test was strictly for that purpose. Judging by the number of people that read the post there was a lot of interest in the test.

Nice shooting doggzoe! Nothing wrong with the way those 290 TEZ "bricks" are grouping.

Maybe elkman and Richard shouldn't add a "why would you do that?" to every compliment you make. Maybe that's a br thing too but for the most part it just sounds like "good enough, but I have a better idea."

Myers, your a big meany! Myers McMeanerton... No, seriously...its my opinion that you are handicapping any of these SMLs at 300+, when you're NOT shooting a MH or APB. Less than 300 yards,a tootsie roll style bullet will work just fine.

This was the last target I shot with sabots out of my Shilen. 11/49.5 N110/H322, distance was 200yds. Blew a sabot on the 3rd shot with the 195BX but that was before Barnes changed their bullets and went to a more squared off base like the XTPs, alleviating the sabot blowing issues. Think 56gr H4198 was a good load with the 200 XTP with that barrel also. Lots of guys have went to Savageshooters 10/50 4759/H4198 duplex, came along after I went sabotless, but seems to be a favorite and not temp sensitive. Tar12 had a good N120 load but I have never shot that powder. Someone here surely knows the load or you could PM Tar12. I had to knurl the Barnes or they would not shoot for me. Your mileage may vary. The magic load was 60gr N120. It is even more accurate for me with sabots than the 10/50 load, when I shoot them. Jay

Elkman I shot the XTP's to get comfortable with the gun and while waiting for my sizing die and I did not shoot any B209. That was a side conversation someone else was having. I feel XTP's kill a deer just as dead as any other bullet under a 150 yard with a behind the shoulder shot(counting 2 a year since 05). After that they may not be as accurate and I would not go any further with them on a shot. The last test I posted was with 290 Barnes tez, which shot pretty good for me. I think the all copper bullet would be pretty devastating on a deer to 250 yards or so. I will up the charge on the next trial to 60gr of 4198 but still have the 10gr of 4759 to back up the ignition. Better safe than sorry IMO. I am still planning on testing some more 250 thru 300be's I also plan on another build in the future in .45 as I have acquired two more rem 700ml in SS (really only wanted one but won two). I like you am very happy with the Shilen barrel and will more than likely go this route again. Don

Thanks Richard. I will take bricks like that a 100 yards day in and day out. Heck every animal I have taken in the last 10 years has been under 100yds with 250gr XTPS. The one deer that went the furthest was a hundred yards so these 290gr bullets shooting this good being pushed this fast...no worries. Don
