I just was contacted by Luke who advised me the new barrel has come in and he Fed-Ex'ed of to Mike for the machine work. I live close enough to Mike that I will drive up to his place and pick it up. Hopefully be shooting the completely new gun.....................................(Boyd's Pro-Varmint (tacticool) with SS Rem. 700 ML action, Farrel base, Shilen/Rem. trigger, my 16X Leupold MKIV scope and a 28" Heavy Varmint contour Brux barrel along with Luke's new plug) in a couple of weeks. Again, thanks to all who made this possible! I have been like a "fish out of water" having sold my old gun with the new Shilen barrel. I have been relegated to shooting my .223 flat top, and my Benjamin Marauder .25 PCP pellet rifle. Along with a host of other CF rifles and LR pistols. But mainly I enjoy the muzzle loader. Our fellow member Herman just recently had cataract eye surgery. He came to the range today and fired a few shots at 300 yards with his old Mosin Negant and broke a clay bird so he is a happy camper. He will get the other eye done on Monday so recently its just been our other partner Bill and myself on Tuesday. Richard

Good deal...What are planning on shooting with it ?....Go ahead and send some high dollar bullets downrange to see what she'll do is my vote....IMO with all your testing good or bad the new barrel was justly deserved and more....congrats on your new toy to be....

I was just thinking about the new barrel today, funny how things work out! I'm super happy to hear your getting it soon! Can't wait to see range reports and hope to see some great results!
Between work, school, family, and chores I have not had a chance to get out myself. Driving me nuts!
Thinking of building another rifle next year but also thinking I might spend the money on an elk hunt instead, choices, choices!
SUPER HAPPY TO SEE YOU GET YOUR BARREL, Awesome!

Riverrat............Take the hunt, you can always cobble a gun together. You got to do them hunts while you are still young and in good shape. I guess I will have to pick up a few 275 and 300 BE's..............Launching them $2 + bullets down range when I am not preparing for a high dollar hunt just does not make sense to me. I am not competing like I do with my 600 yard IBS matches? And actually I get a kick out of finding a load that shoots bug holes with a Hornady/Speer/Sierra plain Jane bullet. Thanks again. Richard

Mike could you take a few pics of the machining and plug. And how it was put together from the start. And are you going to bed the stock for him? It would be nice to see how it is done from start to finish.

Cuda...............I have done a couple of articles with pictures on the bedding process. Mike is only doing the machine work on the barrels for Luke..............If you recall, I do build rifles for members here on Doug's? Mike lives close enough so its not a big deal to take a drive up into the mountains to make the pick up along with another customers barrel. schunter...........Don't be expecting some fancy/schmancy rifle like Hillbill! Mine are utilitarian............Flutes don't make hem more accurate, just more "cooler!" but yes, there will be pictures. Mike..........how far exactly are you from Hickory? Real close to Boone? I guessing an hour or so? Send a PM with location. Richard

If that PN didn't have that looseness in the breech area, I would probably still be shooting it. Hopefully the new Brux will rectify that situation and I can exceed the 3600 shot mark by quite a bit more. Thanks Richard

Thanks Richard I checked my new Brux for consistency from one end to the other and was very pleased...It's now on it's way home from being Blackiced.... Hopefully we'll be shooting soon. Zen

Cuda, these pictures are for your request. put barrel in chuck and dial in, since I have a set tru chuck it is easy to get everything running concentric Face end of barrel turn to diameter and cut relief on end Thread prebore for breech plug seat Final pitch diameter check All cleaned up Move barrel to the 10L lathe and dial in for the crown cut. crowns need to be cut with concentricy <.001 Drill and ream for threads I hand tap to keep heat down and to be able to feel when the tap bottoms out. Three taps will be used...plug...standard...and bottoming Threads get a good brushing to remove any wire edges and flakes Measure for headspace, this is a custom made micrometer I use for chambering...lets you reference the shoulder for accurate placement I use a piloted counterbore to cut for headspace with tailstock feed Test fit with one of Luke's production plug and you are done.

Very nice pictorial Mike! If you don't mind me asking, why do you change lathes between steps? Just curious! Thanks

Cole,
My heavy 16 inch lathe cuts better coarse threads so I use it for the shanks. The rest of the process is tailstock intensive and the 16's tailstock is heavy and a bit*h to move.
The 10L is my chambering lathe that I restored to new condition...it is a joy to use and the tailstock is much easier to move back and forth...just need to fork out the $1000 for a set tru chuck for it...ouch!

I was going to ask the same question about changing lathes but Bob the builder beat me to it. If all of this equipment is in your basement I don't think I would leave the basement. About how long does it take to do all this work? If your up to adopting a kid in his late 40's I'M available.:-)
