So what is the highest BC .40 cal bullet that will stabilize in a 1:20" twist barrel? I am thinking about using my Slewfoot tweaked H&R Buffalo Classic for my deer tag this year and I may go with a .40 in a sabot, just for grins. Any recos?

The 240 CEB's are the highest I know of but don't work well in a sabot ,but sabotless they are a favorite for the .40 cal guys....I think Myers is working on a .40 high BC bullet....BTW good to see you back, would love to hunt the missile range one day....

Precision Rifle QTs and DCs are the highest i know about. There is some debate over the max FPS these can handle. They are a tipped lead bullet and they are offered in weights upto 260gr.
The advertised BC is probably highly inflated but i have no doubt the heavier weights are quite a bit higher BC than a 200gr SST or Barnes 195gr.

Hornady SSTs shoot flattest for me.

SML, Thanks. Yeah, I have been gone for a while. I have not shot a ML since October 2012 when I got my bull. That was the last time I got to hunt. Gotta love the lottery system to draw a tag. Anyhoo, I drew a deer tag with ML this year, so I am back into it.
GMB54-120, I liked the QT40 bullets when I shot the nasty stinky stuff, but at the velocities I will be pushing them, I know they will not work.
T7, Thanks, I have been shooting them in my .45 Knight with good success out to 250 yards. After that, they peter out pretty quick.
I will probably get some of Parker's E-Max bullets to use with sabots in my Rem Ultimate or to shoot them naked in my RemPac.

Been waiting and wondering who will be the first to strike a deal with Myers to put a Pacnor (or any brand for that matter) 40 cal barrel on an H&R or an Apex. Just me always thinking.. 200 SST may be your best bet for a saboted 40 cal bullet in the 45, if that don't pan out you could always try the 195 Barnes and see if it'll work for ya.

I have been thinking the same thing about a .40 on my apex. Just wish there was a better way to mount a scope other than drilling holes in the barrel. Now if Bob the builder could come up with a 20 inch barrel with a brake to fit an Apex with a mount that doesn't need to be screwed to the barrel I would send him an Apex Monday am.

I thinks the wheels are turning. Maybe? Should I start packing the Apex up? If it sits around long enough at his shop he might figure something out to get it done to get it out of his way.Haha

Well, OG, I can say its a very safe bet, it won't be me. Personally, I see no reason to go below .45 cal with a barrel. I'll leave the experimentation to those with more ambition. I would consider rebarreling my Savage if I could get the right custom .50 cal barrel.

I'm in the "process" of having a mold made that should throw a very high BC .401 bullet now. (Cast bullets) It will utilize an aluminum BT and should be hard enough to take any pressure your sabot will take. Should expand well without shattering also even at very high speeds. The bullet will be a flat base and should be about 275gr. It should stabilize in any gun 24 twist and faster with moderate velocity.
Two major problems. My mold and die maker has been updating his shop and so far I have no finish date, though I hope very soon. The second problem is I am not sure I even want to mess with trying to produce and sell them to the public.
That said if my mold and die man gets things finished and it works out favorable for me I would not be opposed to passing on the contact info. Once he has the CNC settings he can reproduce to order the mold, tips and tip seating/swaging die.
Although I said swaging don't take that the wrong way. These will be moderately hard bullets that should be able to take 40,000 psi and still perform. Swaging will be for the tip to gain 100% concintricy on the install. You would need to size them to desired caliber.
Sorry I can't offer more info than this but I will let the board know what's up when I finally get some bullet making parts.

I'm contemplating having my 25-06 pro hunter barrel rebored to .408 and having Luke's plug put in it. Just an idea for now though.

The best choices you have in a saboted 45 is a 200 sst (the most accurate) and 195 barnes ( the toughest ). This is from my experience.

As rob67 mentioned both are fine deer bullets.

Should have known Carlos already had something similar done.

Best of luck, I'm sure you'll get er dialed in to satisfaction +
