I have decided to end my self imposed leave of absence from posting only because I finally got my new rig up and running today and took it for a short spin specs: 700 ss cf action w/ PT&G one piece bolt/ milled spiral fluting/ mini M-16 extractor/ aluminum bolt knob black iced .250 Holland lug / 25" Brux w/ Harrells Tac brake/ spiral fluting by twisted barrel Hankins HIS ignition and plug w/.035 bushing aluminum firing pin assembly jewell trigger set @ 24 ozs all ss parts melonite treated Mcmillan HTG stock green/black &tan speckletone; pillared and bedded weight without scope and rings 8.82 lbs with SS shroud ( aluminum is not back from black ice yet) the bottom metal, base, shroud, shingle shot follower, bolt knob and screws are black iced. this will be my all purpose hunting rig if it proves out, looks like it will be ok from the first outing. got some shots in between rains storms, 13 shots all together, 9 in the group pictured on a very warm barrel without any cool downs. didn't get to check speeds due to rain starting but im guessing close to 2900s if not for the flyer the group was not too bad, I think it will be a keeper

Looks too nice to take in the woods Well I'd say it looks plenty good for bambi whopping. Got the right "pattern" on the target and right colors on the gun. Nice job. Glad you are back to posting. Hope all well in "them thar hills". 10

Very nice rig, Glad to see you back. Is this a 450-458 barrel smooth sized or something smaller with full form bullets?

the only black ice on this one is the aluminum parts, the melonite treatment and the black ice match very well, you cant tell them apart. actually the melonite so far looks good, it has certain attributes that are desireable. it surface hardens the metal, increases barrel life, makes it slicker and also makes it more corrosion resistant. the down side to melonite is that there is no more machining once its done, it makes the metal too hard to cut with common cutting tools. the black color is simply what the process does to steel, either cm or stainless. to my knowledge this is a first on a SML but as long as accuracy is there I think the melonite will be a good fit for these rigs, time will tell. I will do more accuracy testing in the near future and post the results....

How do they compare cost wise? cost for melonite is a little more expensive, 200 plus shipping IF the gun is completely disassembled BUT if you have a bolt with a soldered on handle it must be tig welded in place first (all remingtion 700s). the melonite process is a very high temperature molten salt bath that will melt solder and thus the handle falls off. I went with a one piece bolt so I had no worries. the bore is standard .458 and these bullets were smooth form sized very loose ( two finger seating pressure)
