I ordered a Kreiger 7mm barrel in 1 in 8.5" twist about a week or so ago. Probably will have it chambered in 7mm Rem mag. Should this twist stabilize both bullets well? thanks, Kyle

It should. My next 7mm barrel will be an 8.5 for those two and the heavy SMK. Right now I shoot 168gn SMK and 162gn A-MAX from a 9

I went with the 4 groove instead of the 5r. What's your opinion on the two? Thanks, Kyle

Doesn't matter. Some guys think odd number lands have an advantage at long range for a couple of reasons; I understand the concept but don't know it can be proven. I have shot 3, 4, 5R, 6 groove, and 1 polygonal barrel for long range work and I don't see much difference. That said, these days I am shooting fewer (3 and 5R) grooves when possible. I want to try a Broughton 5C next; curious minds need to know.

I helped build a 700 in 300 Dakota with a Broughton 5C a couple of years ago. First 3 shots went .3 and I don't think it's ever shot a group over .5 moa. Be prepared for a wait, it took almost 11 months to get the barrel back then

Waiting is part of it. I remember when I could get a Lilja barrel in 4 weeks or less and McMillan stocks in under two months. My last barrel from anyone took 12 weeks and my fastest McMillan delivery in the past few years has been 5 months. When you are a rifle junky you just keep ordering parts and build guns as they show up.

Kyle: my 1:9 4 groove Lilja barrel stabilizes the 180 SMK's and initial short range testing (<300 yds)shows that it also stabilizes the 200g Wildcat bullets. But then again I'm shoving them a bit faster than you will be. 180's are moving ar 3350+ fps and the 200's were moving right below 3300. But, I haven't found the sweet spot (fps wise) for the 200's yet.
I found out that coyotes don't like the Berger 180's. I hit one at an impact velocity right around 2170 fps and it only walked about 20' and never took another step.

Here's a coyote my brother shot with a 168 grain A-Max with his 300WSM I built for him a few years ago.. The coyote was about 50 yards out. Them coyotes don't like those A-Max bullets very well either.. Jeff Hankins

It's chambered in 7mm Allen Magnum.

What kind of barrel life do you get, or expect to get with those loads? That is impressive velocity to say the least. I have a .280 improved 40 degree that I load 62.5gr of retumbo with a Berger 168 at 2946fps out of a 26" hart. Thanks, Kyle

1,000 to 1,500 rounds. It's supposed to shoot 1/2 moa out to 1K, but I know it'll do better than that. @300 yds I saw 1/4 moa.
I just don't shoot fast enough to get the barrel hotter than what my hand can stand.

I'm leaning more and more toward the 7 mm Rem Mag for this build. I'm hoping the blank will finish out at 29"". Probably about 2-3 more months out on getting the barrel. Kyle

I went through a wildcat spree and am back to 7mm Rem Mag myself.

If I go with the 7mm Rem Mag chambering and the barrel finishes out at 29", how fast would you expect a max load of Retumbo to push a Berger 168 VLD? I get 2946 average in my .280 improved with a 2.5" or so shorter barrel. 3100 ish? Kyle

QuickLoad puts it in the 3170 fps area at SAAMI specs. If you load long, it will alter the data slightly. 7RM, 168 gr Berger, Retumbo, 61k max average pressure, 3.290" OAL.

I've had nothing but excellent luck with Tim North Barrels. Broughton are really the underdog of the barrel companoes. Everyone's love Brux or Bartlin, however every broughton I've owned shoots sub .25 moa.

Also a 1-9 will stabilize both easily. I got a 1-9 in my 7mm300wsm

You won't have any trouble with a 1-9 twist. I have used a 1-9 on several 7/300 wby 1000 yards comp guns I also have a 7MM STW with a 36" long 1-8 twist Krieger long range gun I built several years ago. It loves 180 gr Bergers at 3450fps. But for all practical purposes I would go with a 1-9 twist.

Got the barrel in a few days ago, got her locked up in the safe. Next order of business is a long magnum action with a built in rail preferred. Any recommendations?

Defiance Deviant if you want an integral rail but nothing wrong with a 700LA either. I've got a pair of Krieger 6.5mm barrels about to go on 700SA for PRS matches.

Defiance is one of the finest custom actions built currently. I've got the Deviant tactical and it's awesome.

Defiance is one of the finest on the market. Typically the only thing it'll need is its lugs lapped. They build actions for APA and GA precision. Both top tier. Jered at APA uses them exclusively and he only uses the best stuff in his eyes for rifles leaving his shop
