Well I waited 4 months for barrel from Luke but got busy this week and started to build it. I ordered a .392x.400 blank ( just contoured) I wanted to do the rest. I had came up with my own plug design with a 45 degree sealing surface. I did this for two reasons, one, was it increased the available amount of sealing surface by over 40%, over a squared shoulder type and the other is that the 45 degree shoulder should center better (not that thats a problem with others). All work on the BP and barrel other then the contour I did myself. I also took 1.5 in of the barrel and made a FF die. Waiting on a media blasting gun to put the finish on the barrel. I have a HS precision stock ready to be bedded. Just waiting to put the finish on the barrel so I can torque it down the bed the stock. Thanks Luke again for the great service.

Very nice! So that's SAE, does that mean I can still use a JIC 37* if I'm in a pickle? very nice work should work quite well. What diameter and pitch did you go with?

Looks very nicely done...I've always wondered why bp's had a flat sealing surface instead of angled like a valve and seat in an engine....Good upgrade imo.....

You machinist pro's are making this machinist novice very jealous! Lately, every time I turn around, someone is making a better mouse trap with the breech plugs.
Mighty fine bunch of machine work there.

The BP is a prototype and is made from a 1in. grade 8 bolt, I will make the next one from 4140

I got a chance to run some rounds today to try it out for the first time. All in all I was happy with the way it all turned out. My BP is sealing good, not bulging the primers (using the .04 bushing) I am however getting a little blowback around the primer, nothing bad but will need to work on this with the next plug. I started out with 45g. then 49g. then 52g. of IMR 4198 to get on paper and to evaluate everything. After 3 shots and center things up a bit on paper and primers looking good as far as pressure I loaded 55g. of 4198 and made a 5 shot group. (195g. Barnes TSX FF). Speeds were: 2852- Loose fit 2916- Good fit 2872- Tad loose 2921- Good fit 2914- Good fit Then I made a 5 shot group of 74g. IMR 4895 using 200g. SST FF for about a 7/8" group. (all @ 100yd.) Am using just T/C anti-seize lube on there BP threads comes right out with no issues. No gas cutting anywhere. Speeds were: 2830-LF 2847-LF 2861-GF 2880-GF 2876-GF

That's looking really good. I wouldn't think you'd get any blow by at all?? How tight of a fit do you allow for your primer pocket?

I went to blow back control on lukes new plug with down sizing the bushing to .030 and a 5/32 flash hole which starts blowing again around 78gr h4198 and a 300 m/h. Otherwise all average+ loads seal fine. jeff~

How was the recoil ?

Post by Typical171 on Apr 16, 2015 18:26:37 GMT -5
Thanks for the compliments. The recoil is ok, probably won't go with a brake. the fit for the primer was really good I thought. I could only load a fresh primer about a 1/3 of the way by hand. I wouldn't want the bolt trying to close any tighter then it is. I am looking at building anther plug with a better sealing surface for the nose of the primer. My next outing I am going to throw the .030 bushing in it and see what happens. Thanks for the tip Jeff. I will also swap bullets with powders (195 Barnes with 4895 etc.) to see if the Barnes shoot any better. I think its the nature of the SST to group better.

Wow! I love your ff sizer, you really went all out even with all index marks and the knurl is perfect! You could sure give me some pointers with the knurl-sometimes they come out great, other times so so. On my ff sizer I am using an arbor press so mine is in reverse of yours and I size Hornady mono-flex 250 which are even tough with an arbor press. I still like the forward sealing surface for the breech plug for myself. I know it is harder to do but is my personal preference. I make a slight reverse taper at the front edge and get great sealing. Mine is stainless steel, not sure what #, probably 304. It was just in the shop laying around. I also have a little leakage around the primer but very slight and since its a break-open I can get them out easily. Where are you located? Send me a PM. I would love to kick some ideas around. I normally buy a barrel blank and do all the work myself as machining is my occupation (now retired) and will be machining until I die. Love it! I can see it is your hobby as well! Maybe occupation? Great work and design! I'm sure you will get it all tuned in! Jim

Are you going to try some loads with Varget powder? I don't have any varget although it would be interesting to try some. I know others have had good luck with it here on the board.

Varget works great boosted with SR4759 for myself and N110 for others. As a single H or IMR 4895 will be a better powder then running straight charges of Varget. 10x works well also as a single or boosted. You have a good many powder choices. Have fun.

The last I saw of your .40 shooting H4895 you were around 70-72g. Did you ever go any higher and with the 4895 load? Also do you have a feel for were your at with pressure?
