Well, this is my first foray into sabot less shooting with the Pac-Nor .45. There are some mixed results and decent results. I tried a lot of different bullets and loads. I provided the targets and the loads (as usual) to give you some ideas on what did and did not work. The angle of the morning sun at our range at this time of the year tends to be a problem with my Pact Chronograph, even with the shields I made. It seems the sun reflects of one of the interior walls and gets to the Photo cells???
Also another incident which I might like some feed back on.........Lat week I shot largely in the rain...and did use the chronograph. It accumulated quite a bit of water on the glass lens for the photo cells. I got six great readings for one of the duplexes I was shooting....Actually and average of 2870 fps with 18 fps ES for 6 shots! But, it seemed like a very high velocity. This week that same exact load seemed to shoot more like in the 2600 fps range (again, with intermittent readings on the chrono.) Could the rain cause higher than normal readings???
Getting back to the shooting.
Wen I got to the range at 8:00 a.m. (Herman and Bill had already been there since 6:30 ) it was sunny and the wind was non-existent so I decided I wanted to re shoot that 10/60 duplex that gave me the 1.8" 300 yd. group at 2870 fps.
I started with shooting one fouler shot at 100 yards and you can see it at the top left of the target board, a single shot. I immediately went to 300 yards and shot six shots. This was using my third ballistic plex dot. It was definitely a dead critter ;D
I did a minor scope adjustment.
I still had three more of the 10/60 N110/N130 loads left and decided to try it with a 200 gr. XTP which I sized in my just recently created die. If you look in the center of th e board, you will see two shots which measure .6" CTC. Did that ever make me feel good. I went to load the third shot and the bullet practically fell right down the barrel??? (Note: I forgot to put veggie wads on any of these shots) Based on the loose fit, I figured the powder would not ignite so I just aimed the rifle at the embankment and pulled the trigger......Wow, 2414 fps. (I got no readings on the first two shots?) So, I wasted that shot. Who says you need pressure to ignite smokeless powder? That had me scratching my head?
You can look over the various loads and see the results. It looks like the 200 gr. XTP's have a lot of potential. (at least at 100 yards) Next week I will try them at 300 and see what they do. I also snuck in one 200 gr. Hornady FX in group 2 which somewhat enlarged that five shot group. I will shoot more of them next week.
N-120 looks like a good possibility giving some consistent velocities using the 230 XTP.
So much stuff to try.
The cool rod was used for most every shot. I did go two shots in a row sabot less, but after that, used the rod to bring the barrel temperature down.
