This post now contains pics of the arrowhead plug replacing the Savage results. I know this isn't the right forum for this post....but I figure it will get maximum exposure here. So mods please let it ride here for a little while at least. Is there any way to add a picture here that doesn't involve photo bucket? I would post more pics for sure if I didn't have to go through all that. I don't do it often enough to keep the process fresh ind my mind.... For example Facebook and my phone or Ipad....make a post add the photo and move on. In my opinion it would greatly add to the value of content on this board. With as many talented people we have could someone please initiate a Chang in procedure to simplify it for us older guys..... Like a one step process...?
Thank you all in advance Drop

Drop,
I'm back at the home-20 and would be glad to post some pics for you!! Send 'em to my email address I PM'd you last week I used to be able to right click on pics I had stored my desk top and copy/past the url into the add pic box here but I reformatted my hard drive and have a different file system which won't let me do tht. Right now my only easy option is the photobucket routine.

The reason for photobucket is the bandwidth needed to host pictures, if OUR members have not exceeded the bandwidth then you can post directly using the "ATTACHMENT" button above and to the right when you are writing a post. We use most of it in the first half of the month so unless you post early our "FREE" space is used up. We could pay for extra storage bandwidth but I think that most like to just come here without having to pay. So most just get a free Photobucket account. Unless you are Carlos Danger ( or other political figures )who really cares what you put there edge.

The hole at the top is shot 1. The next 4 grouped .434......tightened right up afte the barrel was properly fouled
Then they started to tighten up
This is the first 5 shots AFTER the Arrowhead plug modification....looks bad dont it....however this was a SQUEAKY clean barrel....look at the next few.pics
This is 5 shots with 5 gn red dot booster ....65gn h4198 275 MH 100 yds
"Capone"
Barrwl extension...lol AKA muzzle brake... actually can help with velocity in some instances
Yet another

Now that's a lot of clearance Clarence! My plastic stock still hits the barrel...someday I'll give it a chance to breath edge.

Looks like bills work to me, judging by the squeegeed bedding. Looks real nice and uniform no matter who did it!

Yes it is Biils work. And it's impeccable . And like he, Mike's and Earnhardts advice the shortened barrel doesn't handicap me at all. Drop

12pt, have your compared any velocities from your new shorter barrel to the old, longer barrel length, with the exact same powder and bullet combo?

Hey Russ...............so give us a rundown! Were your groups any better than before the modification? Were your primers before any different? Were you leaking any pressure back beyond the Savage BP? The new Brux will have one of Luke's plugs. My only contact with these new plugs is the one I installed on a recent build which I only test fired twice. From a machinist standpoint, they definitely seem to be easier to headspace. BTW, the groups look great! Richard

Honestly i was fighting with the gun from the begining...leakage...tried billets ...sizing...loads...and even sent it and had it re-shouldered. Only had to cut it back 3thousandths to clean it up....and it still Leaked. Its gonna be a couple weeks before I can get to the range again...yeah I know it stinks. I am 5.min from my indoor archery range...and 30 min from my rifle range. As soon as I can I will get some numbers and.post them drop

The new Brux will have one of Luke's plugs. My only contact with these new plugs is the one I installed on a recent build which I only test fired twice. From a machinist standpoint, they definitely seem to be easier to headspace. BTW, the groups look great! Richard I cant compare velocity to the old plug. I was so concentrated on getting it to seal up and work properly that I never got that far. History I got this barrel from a member online here as a new barrel. And It was so no questions there. Contracted HillBill to build it for me and he done a perfect job...totally happy with everything he done. He sent it to me and I took it to the range and had some blowby issues...but never thought it was bad...no worse than my savage or encore. On the 3rd outing I got it to roup well with a duplex load of 5 gn red dot under 65 gn h4198. It just wouldn't group with 70 gn h4198. And shod a .743 5 shot group @ 100 yds (posted above). was tickled pink. Took it home to clean it...pulled the plug and found gas cutting. Called Bill and asked for advice. and followed that by sending it off to have the plug sealing surface re shouldered. I had caught it in time so only 3 thousandths had to be removed to square it up... very happy again. got it home...to the range...got it settled down. Took 8 shots and seen some blowby...and Teflon tape shreds in my action. Pulled the plug out. and evidence of gas cutting again. I might add that this was one of a new batch of plugs that had a taper around the sealing surface... Took it home and Cleaned it up with a HillBill cleaning tool. looked good. But it ate at me. So a machinist friend told me about the new plug and thought I might be a good candidate to try one. So off it went and got rebored and plugged. I was afraid og the short barrel. Even knowing how well "Shorty" worked for you Richard. So I contacted some senior members and asked for advice. All involved assured me that I would doubtfully lose any noticeable loss in velocity... And that in some cases a muzzle brake had helped in velocity. So here we are today. Same barrel 23 1/8" long. I cant say about velocity... however after the barrel was properly fouled I shot that .434 group with the same load. Primers are perfect. The plug works as intended...fixed my problem. On a side note the member I purchased the barrel from had the same leakage problems on the barrel he kept ( he bought 2) He elected to go through the mfg for satisfaction. so I hope this explains everything . As I said I will get some readings next trip to the range. At least we can kind of guess what I am doing compared to all the other 25" barrels out there. Thanks All Drop

SNIP. I might add that this was one of a new batch of plugs that had a taper around the sealing surface... SNIP. What "taper" are you talking about, are these from Savage or are these aftermarket? Just curious as to where there would be a taper that would help sealing. edge.

Edge,
I think Russell is talking about the chamfer on the sealing shoulder. That batch of plugs had a larger than normal chamfer and reduced the sealing area substantially

Drop. I had my doubts but you proved me wrong. If a good reason exists, and if done professionally like that, it is worth cutting the barrel and changing plugs.
