OK who is cutting and rethreading to fit Luke's new plug to a McGowan 45 barrel fitted for a Savage BP from Luke? Looking to get a new bushing plug and I might just change right over to Luke's new plug. If the price is right so what is the going rate for this?

It's gonna require your barrel to be shortened from the breech end so your contour will determine if it's even feasible. I'll do them on contours that can handle the change.

Personally unless you are having a problem that seems a bit extreme! Not sure what contour you have but your stock probably fits it pretty well right now and it probably won't be as pretty when you get done. Obviously if you have a poorly bored breech then it might be worth it, but the Savage plug has served many for probably over a million shots. edge.

Why change if you are not having problems? I'm not going to cut a great shooting barrel down to go with the latest and greatest. I'll continue to shoot heavy loads in my .45 with the bushing plug and use the money it would cost for shooting supplies.

Other things to consider you are shortening the barrel and what loads worked before may not be so with the shorter barrel. Also you have changed the harmonics of the barrel and what was a great shooter may not still be and you will probably take a FPS hit as well. I would not do it with a lighter Sendero style barrel it should only be done with a #7 Contour or larger which will make it into a Sendero style barrel and if you were shooting heavy loads they may not be as safe with a Sendero stlye barrel versus a #7 contour or larger.
Just a few things to think about before you jump into this head first.
Hope this helps,

I had a #7 taper cut back 1.84". It started with a 5" lug or chamber area......it is still 3.2" and in my case it shooting just as good ...if not better than it was. But mine was a leaker and Idont like teflon tape. Doesnt mean I wont use it. Bur I would rather fix the pronlem than bandaid it. Both, my builder and machinist advised me that due to the chamber and diameter of my barrel it would be a safe move. I am shooting stout loads....5gn red dot under 65gn h4198 pushing a 275 gn mh.BUT.... onecardchuck is right.....this wont work on all barrels...and it very well could cause harmonic Changes in the barrel. I HIGHLY advise consulting with a qualified builder and machinist before going through with this Be safe...shoot straight...have fun Drop

3500 shots on my PN barrel with a Savage plug and it would still shoot one holers with the right load! You just knew this would happen! The grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence? But yes, it maybe just AS green! Unless you are shooting Earnhardt type EARGOSPLITTENLOUDENBOOMER loads, I think your wasting your $$$$.........Just my opinion. Richard

The 290 Barnes TEZ with a 10/60 Clays/H-4198 duplex with no wad and the bullet going down with not a whole lot of resistance. Mind you that barrel was way looser than the Shilen so what worked int it may not work in every barrel. The thing is, when I go to the range, I don't just keep shooting one load because it is good? I keep trying to find other bullets and powders to shoot also. I have pages and pages of data that I can always go back to and pick a good one. Richard

The difference between a drop-in Brux with the new plug and doing all that machining on a PAC barrel may not be worth it. Plus you end up with a short PAC barrel with a bizarre contour instead of a new Brux.

Plus at that time I added a muzzle brake.... and just ask Richard how a 23"barrel shoots. And price depends on your machinist

I wish the Luke's plug came out a bit sooner but I already machined my McGowen barrel for the Savage plug. Tomorrow is her first time to the range so, who knows, if she can't dance maybe I'll still cut it. I didn't taper the barrel at all for 4 inches so it shouldn't bother the glass bedding.
