Iv read many forums talking about the topic and most seem to be in favor of the first focal plane, but most posting on the topic are long range marksman. I am mostly a hunter and my scope is going on a rem 700 Sml.anyone have any first hand advice if a 1st focal plane scope is needed for deer hunting ?max shot being around 300 yards.

No, you do not need an FFP for most hunting. Honestly, a SFP is probably better for most hunting because you can back out your magnification and have a bolder reticle for low light shooting. That said, I don't have too much of an issue with FFP reticles when zoomed out or in low light but generally, guys who shoot long try to do so under favorable conditions and not at last light. Illumination works better with SFP than FFP also if you want it. Unless you need one though, their is no reason to add the weight or expense for FFP.
