Well I made it out to shoot Dad's new gun and hand it over to him. I didn't have much time and it was windy as heck, but I had to shoot it.... First was 68 grains of H4198 and a 275 BE, .060 veggie wad and Fed 209A primer. The BE's load really nice right out of the box, just as is with most of the McGowen's, There were a few that had a little less loading pressure than others but that is normal unless you knurl them up and smooth size them back down, didn't have time for that, so they went straight out of the box and down the bore. I started out with a very new and clean bore, so I set up at 100 yards and shot off the old trusty picnic table, 5 shots back to back, no cool down time in between. Here are the first 5 shots:
I let the gun cool down for a few minutes and switched targets, and yes Dave I clicked the scope over some too!! I then jumped to 70gr of H4198 with the rest being the same. I again shot 3 shots back to back, I was out of time and the wind gusts were awful by this time, after these three shots, I was happy with what I had for the conditions, so I wrapped it up and headed out to run errands. Here is the second and final group of the day: ** I had no sticky primers, no bulged primers and the primers come out literally spotless! The 4-16x50 WCE is a great scope for the $$$. Nice work Cole and thanks again. You made me and my Ole man more than happy!
Dad was getting ready to leave when I got there so he stuck around for a bit then he had to leave, so he didn't get a chance to shoot it yet, but he was THRILLED with it to say the least! I snapped a few pics of it outside so maybe the true beauty of this gun could be seen better. On my dads bathroom scale, the gun showed around 8.5 pounds, and I would not want to shoot this gun very much without the brake, it still has fairly stout recoil even with the brake, but definitely tolerable. Here are a few pics of the gun and some of the distractions I have to deal with while trying to shoot, besides the wobbly table and 1970's chair...

What did you come out to on the scale? That couldn't have been pretty! :/ those were some clean primers for a federal, I hope they stay that way! GREAT trigger pulling!

Awesome shooting! Great looking build and not typical of what we normally see. Wish I could have been there to see his face when you unveiled it. Nice job Myers!

Forgot one of the most important pictures of the day! One of the spent primers, they all came out like this. Very impressive seal.

Whats that 3 shot group measure? .880 outside to outside. Not bad for a windy day off of a picnic table.

Chris Thanks Chris, it was definitely a good day, only wish we would of had more time to shoot it and got him behind the trigger. Groups would have been much better had he been pulling the trigger....

very nice rig and a shooter to boot...very clean primers to be federals, you must have a batch that are actually round...

I agree, they go in snug and come out snug, but I've never seen primers so clean myself. Now me and the Ole man can go head to head with the McGowen. 45 SML's. Thanks for the compliments all.

Great shooting. The three shot group is tight. The gun looks great, and I like that break on it.

Great looking rig! I'm a sucker for nice walnut, ebony tips, and stainless. No better combo in my eyes.

Very nice groups and in the wind at that--I would have been proud to shoot those in flat calm! Your father is lucky to have a son like you, he has a shooter there for sure.
Nice job Cole!! Some nice craftsmanship.

Are you using a .030 or .040 bushing breech plug?

Are you using a .030 or .040 bushing breech plug? .030 savage bushing plug, that's what I have in all my guns to this point and no problems. I'll likely go to a .040 in the .375 and maybe in the .400/.408, waiting to hear when the new batch of .040 bushings will be made, if they haven't been already. The .040 in our test .375 split in half first trip to the range, so I'd like to wait and get some 94/6 .040 bushings instead of the pure tungsten if possible. I may have missed the boat and new/old style .040 bushings may already be out there...?
