Saw one in person last night at a gun shop. Really nice looking, priced at $899.
They had it showcased with a pack of the "new" remington ultimate saboted bullet, basically a 250gr barnes TEZ with a gold tip.
Since no SML not my cup of tea, but I bet they sell a bunch.

They have barrel problems right now, and the NORMAL Customer Service problems that they have always had. Head in arse syndrome is alive and well at Big Green. I've handled a few since August, and they do feel and look well built, with the exception of the cheesy looking 1980's dot matrix printed letters on the barrel. Heavy too!

I would think that this build to a smokeless would be less expensive than using the older 700 ML. Everything you need is there minus the barrel and breech plug, or am I missing something?

700 ml around $200. At a minimum add $450 for a barrel, $50 for a plug and $120 for a bolt nose conversion and $100 for a boyds stock for a total of $920.
Ultimate around $900. Add the other stuff.
Big difference just for the action.

The way I see it with a 700ML, you have $250 for an action, $270 for a B&C stock, $450 barrel, $94 bolt nose kit, $35 recoil lug, $100 breech plug, $120 for bottom metal = $1320
With New Ultimate, I see them for $800 (includes B&C stock, action that should work, bottom metal, and usable ram rod), $450 for barrel, and say $150 for breech plug = $1400, and with this you have an ignition system closer to using a CF action.

Obviously I cheaped out a bit on my 700 ml build Does an aftermarket plug exist that would work out of the box with an ultimate conversion?

The real reason I'm having this conversation is cause I want to build a new smokeless and am trying to come up with the best for my money. The real question is does a breech plug exist. If that piece could be had I think it would be a really nice package, without the issue of the bolt retention screw/bolt wear that the 700 ML has. If no breech plug is available I will probably go the 700 ML route with the newer small diameter rear sealing breech plug.

Yes, the breech plug exist. It's called the HIS and I have installed them into several ultimate ML's using new 45 caliber barrels.. Jeff Hankins..

May not be less expensive but defiantly makes a better built rifle. You have a center fire action with locking lugs on the bolt and a solid bottom action. Very strong and effective lock up. Capable of using a module with a primer for a 100% seal from blowby when locked up. Unlike Remington's old ML actions that has no real locking ability.. And the constant struggle to get a good seal.. Jeff Hankins.

Where can I find out more information about the HIS plug?

It is possible the Ulitmate in the future could be on the used market at a reduced price, if that occurs then that platform may see a lot of followers.

If I was building a rifle that I was depending on the lugs for extra safety then I want two lugs for equal distribution in the event of a failure. If I just wanted a standard bolt face for modules then the ultimate would be ok to start with.

Haven't had one in person but I believe the ultimate only has the port side lug and the other side is round? I live under a log though so maybe not.

Haven't had one in person but I believe the ultimate only has the port side lug and the other side is round? I live under a log though so maybe not. Maybe not is correct... The Remington ultimate is built on a 40X action... Full blown target action with solid bottom and two locking lugs.. I should know, I have them stacked from floor to ceiling in the shop for conversions.... And the lugs are not really there for their strength, they are used to cam the primer module into place giving you a compression fit for a 100% seal at the primer, unobtainable using actions without the locking lugs... Jeff Hankins.

Wow!! Floor to ceiling!! Maybe you should charge more so you can quit your day job? Nope already took care of that so I don't know what to tell ya!
Like I said I haven't seen one cuz Jeff has them all! Just like his plug, can't get it unless he puts it in for twice as much.
Seems like a couple months ago when people questioned your extreme operating pressure you stated that it didn't matter because your lugs held the plug in not the threads. Today it's different. Guess you're a man of whatever the day brings.

Seems like a couple months ago when people questioned your extreme operating pressure you stated that it didn't matter because your lugs held the plug in not the threads. Today it's different. Guess you're a man of whatever the day brings. Cole.. I'm sorry I ran out of plugs by the time you decided to order them.. I had over 100 plugs 6 months ago and now I'm down to just enough to do my own builds.. I'm not going to sell them until I get some more made.. I wouldn't expect you to sell your last supply either if you needed it.. When I get the time to do another run of plugs I will be able to part with some... Until then my customers come first.. And by the way, my plug sold for $35.00.. I think that's about half as much not twice as much...but then you still need some priming modules.... If you snooze you loose.. And once again Cole.. You want to bring up what I said months ago.. Yes the lugs will hold back the plug if a catastrophic fail was to happen with the threads, and that is not likely to happen, but the second advantage is the camming effect the lugs give the priming modules.. When asked the question months ago about the extreme pressures I was able to hold the correct answer to that question was the added strength the lugs provide. Today talking about the Remington ultimate ML and the advantage of the locking lugs is that it provides compression to that allow a 100% seal and never a sticking primer.. So I guess the lugs are dual purpose and are even more valuable than you once thought... See how much you can learn from this board when you open mouth and insert foot... Lol.. Just kidding... Jeff Hankins...

Wasn't snoozing just willing to put your system in for someone that didn't care to deal with you. We went another route so I won't be needing your plug.

I feel like about this time last year we were getting quarrelsome. Perhaps it's the never ending winter. I thought/hoped we all got past that: lol...jk...not really...but seriously. Maybe Jeff should host a KY Challenge and Prize Fight to shake it all out. I'll shoot in the prone, sling supported match and fight welterweight.

Now the big question for me, is it a 40x,xr100, or just a solid bottom 700 sa? I hope it's just a 700 short action. I might buy one to build a cf rifle on just to please the atf since it is a 4473 gun!
