I just got my first savage breech plug and I cant get a 209 into the primer pocket. Its either that the pocket is too small (maybe needs cleaned up?) or that my TC primers are too large in diameter (measure .240)
any ideas?

If your trying to put a primer in by hand probally not, it takes the bolt to cam them in. If it fits in by hand it will more than likely have blow back. jeff~

Typically, the primer pocket on SAVAGE breech plugs is just a "tad" tight. Usually a little fine (400 or so) wet/dry sand paper on a small dowel (nail) twisted around the inside is enough to relieve it. As Jeff indicated, it should require the bolt caming closed to push it inside. Going in by hand is definitely too loose. In the case of you TC (don't own one) it might be a little different as you don't have the caming ability a bolt posseses? Richard

I am not able to insert the primer to its final depth in the savage plug when loading the Encore or H&R but I can get it started. Closing the action seats it with no problem. Also requires a "V" slot tool to pop out the primer after firing. I believe that is that is way it should be. A loose fitting primer would have lots of blowback. Go slow if you think it needs polished out. edit to add pic of fired primers

I have a PA Petes plug for my encore. Same thing though. The primer only sits half to two thirds of the way in the plug. Have to close it firmly to get it to lock.

I agree with Superkirby . . And Richard. Very lightly polish the primer cup with some 400 or 600 (I use 600) grit paper wrapped around a 3/16 dowel rod. Just VERY lightly. And make sure the gun is unloaded and install the primer and snap it closed quickly and solidly. Then try to cock the hammer.....if it isn't seated properly the hammer won't cock. If it doesn't then snap it closed again. And when you load and prime this thing make SURE it is pointed in a safe direction. Mine has never misfired in a few hundred rounds ....BUT. Ya never know. I used to carry a small pair of pliers to unprimed... But then I got the idea to just stick a penny in from the side and it comes right out. I also have the Pete's PA machine plug's. I am thinking about sending one to fishawk and getting it converted to a bushing plug Good luck Drop

All above good info. The machining process can leave rough milling marks and by just "polish lightly" works much better. The current manufacture Savage breech plugs do not have the finish of earlier produced plugs to my eye. JMHO and your results may be different. 10 ga

Thanks for the help guys. I think I got it figured out. I just got one started (put on safety glasses + ear plugs) and slammed it home.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think they might be talking about a removal tool like this:

I just tried the penny - it pulls it up but I still need pliers to remove it totally.

I was able to take the lip of my unfired primer to catch the lip on the fired primer and get it started out of the breech plug on my Encore conversion.
