This barrel started off as a blank I bought off eBay and had shipped directly to Cole, Myers129.. Cole contoured the barrel and made it 21.5" and added a Harrels brake. Barrel was fitted once received on the Stevens 200 action with 209 bolt head using a Savage recessed vent liner breech plug with bushing primer seat. Boyds Pro Varmint stock was fitted and bedded by a local gunsmith. This is my 14yr old boys gun. He shot the groups today at 50yds in 20deg temps to get it on paper. If the videos work you will see there is no recoil. He said he don't need no stinkin' Lead Sled. The load he's using isn't a slow one either The stock is off to get camo dipped this week so I will update once it returns. Thanks Cole. Great barrel!!!

Very nice indeed, and the boy is a chip off the Ole Block, he can shoot too. Nice gun, post and shooting. Congrats to you and your son, I'm sure he's all smiles. It is obvious there is very little recoil! Gotta love them 40's, especially with a brake. Nice work on the barrel as well Cole, top notch as always.

Steve, what are the dimensions/contour on that barrel? Soon I will have its longer twin, also wearing a brake. I like the look/finish on that barrel. Any idea what Cole blasted it with? If not, maybe he will chime in.

Nice looking gun 45omega, glad your boy likes it and the recoil(less) suits the young man and his old fart dad. The 40's really should rule for most deer hunting applications. Knock down power that is enough for any game animal in the US and very light recoil even without a brake. It appears that single powder loads fair better in the smaller bores as well??
Ohioguy, the blasting media was 80 grit glass beads and I think it turned out alright. I might try some finer beads but I think Steve's finish will be pretty durable.

Looks really sharp in the Pro Varmint! Cant wait to see the camo on that stock. Did you happen to run those loads over the chrono?

That has to be a lot of fun to shoot, been very surprised with the lack of recoil with the braked .375! Maybe I missed it, what camo dip pattern are you going with? Very sharp rig! I see some friendly competition and bragging rights in your future.

Barrel runs full for 4" then tapers to .750 at muzzle under brake. Barrel was finished to the diameter I asked for. No chrony and no load info right now. I don't want Dougs Pressure Police to get involved Load has been ran thru QL and shot thru my other 408 so its no concern to me.

Thanks for sharing Cole and Steve. Nice work and end result right down to the trigger pulling. Good to see another slower powder being ignited in lower temps with 209's, as Dave has had no issues igniting slow singles with a savage 209 plug in the test 375 as well.

Some fine shooting from the young man and another quality ml to add to your collection. What's your opinion of the brake and the recoil reduction? I'm thinking of doing the same on our .400 for my boy.
I think that 13 twist will really like them 300 grain barnes. Cant wait for you to get it back from dipping and do some more testing.

Steve tell Alex that I said he can probably shoot just as good or better then you and me. The gun looks great and that is some great shooting. Will be sending my McGowen 40 cal. to Cole and he is going to cut it down to the same size as yours and put a break on it. It should be fun to play with. Great shooting Alex.

I will let him know Carlos. He really likes the gun and the lack of recoil. I think he wants to wait until it warms up to shoot more though. Its been brutal cold. I plan on taking it out this week for some 100yd groups before sending the stock away.
I have no issues igniting singles of H4895 in this gun which is recessed making about a 1/4" powder pocket. Zero blowback with the primer seat bushing installed which I'm also sure aids in ignition.

Man that's a nice looking gun. I've been having an itch for a bolt action and one of these just might scratch it. I'll have to see what I can put one together for.

If i do that it may start something i can't afford. I need to assess my funds first.
Are you having to size or knurl bullets before you shoot or what are you doing for that?

Bullets are knurled to fit bore. Today I tried a couple different loads at 100yds to see if this fast twist barrel likes slow or fast. All shots with 200gr SST's. First up was a reduced duplex of 4759/Varget. Shot 1 hit right off cold clean bore then fired next two. I had to walk to the target to see shots 2-3 were in the same hole. Gun now was as cold as when I started and fired a 4th. 4th went where shot 1 hit. Under 1" at 100yds but low compared to the faster loads. Next was a duplex of 4759/10x. These were shot one after another. Right hand was numb when I got to shot 5. IMO 10x is giving a better burn or is cleaner as loading was easier. I like the 10x load. Thanks Carlos. Once the weather gets nicer I will see if this is a barrel that likes to be cool to shoot or if the action screws being loose when I got home might be a contributing factor This gun is a joy to shoot with the brake. Easy to load also. Dump powder thru funnel. Drop a wad in brake and use a short starter to push it in the bore then drop bullet in brake and send them home together. Don't try superglueing a wad to the bullet. Accuracy is horrible. Wad must not be completely burning off and staying with the bullet in flight. I know some have posted good results doing it with a .45 but it's not good in a .40.

Excellent gunsmithing!
Are you using .030 or .040 bushing
Looks like this set-up is going to be a shooter

Was using a vent liner until it got stuck and needs drilled out. I had a .030 bushing plug in the gun today. Works great.

Thanks AirborneIke! We knew we were going into new territory with the 13 twist but 45omega stole that barrel for what he won the auction at. He is getting it tuned in to where it will be shooting right with his 16 and 20 twist once the weather breaks.

Great shooting Steve. Its too cold to have much fun pulling the trigger with cold fingers and chattering teeth. I can see a break in the near future for my .392.

What's wrong, are you letting a little cold weather bother you. You must be getting old. That is some nice shooting and the 10X load works great for me, and it is my main hunting load in the 40 cal.'s unless I'm shooting the 300 gr. pout of it. Sooner or later I know you will be driving tacks with it. Stay warm, we have plenty of time to get that gun going plus you have to wait until I get mine back.
