Does anyone know how savage decided on a 11/16 plug, and not being threaded entire length? jeff~

After having my barrel off today and looking at interior of breech threads and where plug seats I can't help but wonder why the long unthreaded part. The smith that drill my stuck plug out said that unthreaded part was where mine was stuck

I believe the original design had threads all the way to the front, then savage changed it before production. My guess is because it's a lot easier to keep your employees from ramming a tap into the shoulder if you keep them 1/2" away from it. Seems strange that the plug would be stuck on the unthreaded part, as it should have .008" clearance all the way around.

It is not off topic and is what I had figured with all your problems getting the plug out . Now , have the barrel checked with a bore scope . Chris
